Day 9
We were up early and had a great breakfast at the hotel. This hotel seems very upscale compared to some of the others but I must say it doesn't have the character that some of the others did. Like in Erfoud the grounds keeper took us up on the roof and told us how the stars are so amazing from this view, it wasn't like that at this hotel, minus the warmth but it is beautiful.
We headed out with the group for a morning tour of Marrakesh. We went to see the Koutoubia Mosque and we stopped at a very touristy spice shop. The ladies there were very informative but we didn’t buy anything there. We ended the tour in the big square and headed out to stroll around. We were now at the square during the day and it was very different. We saw men with monkeys and there is where we saw the men with snakes!! What a sight to see, men with their flute like instrument making the cobras dance (or get angry).
We shopped for a few hours and managed to get pretty lost in the souks. We went back to the
Community Oven
Locals use this oven. Each neighborhood will have an oven like this one. The bread gets made at home and they bring it to a place like this to have the loafs cooked. tanneries and needed the help from the locals to get back out of the maze of streets and alley ways due to the fact there is no official maps of these areas. Now it's time for our hammam appointment!!!
We were both a bit nervous, not completely sure what to expect but all said and done it was truly an experience that we'll never forget. A hammam is their traditional bath. The experience went something like this. We were lead into a steam room, just the two of us where the lights where candles and the walls were extremely hot. A women first wet us down a then put an aromatic oil on us then let us lay and relax for a while.
She came back in and then used and scrubbing mitt, similar to a loufa mitt, to scrub off what felt like a solid layer of skin ...amazing!! We relax for a while with a mud like mask on us from head to toe and then she came back in and rinsed us off. We then changed rooms and went to the message rooms...all lit with candles. Then had one of the best messages ever, they
messaged most everything from head to toe. Very impressive!
After our relaxing time we went back out to the streets and shopped some more!! We had to stop as we started to wonder if we'd be able to get it all packed!! But boy did we have fun bargaining for all of our wonderful souvenirs. Marrakesh had been one of the best stops along the trip...lovely city and great friendly people.
Went back to the hotel for a great buffet supper and shared some drinks in the bar with some of the group. We've met some great new friends.
