Hippos, elephants, a lizard, a spider and more It has been on our minds for a couple of years to visit Malawi. It may be a bit of a forgotten corner of the world but it is a country people we have met have spoken well of. This year it fitted nicely in our schedule to go there and since we also managed to get flight tickets we decided to go. Malawi is shaped almost like a sausage, it is long a... Read Full Entry

That elephant looks happy

Doesn't that elephant look happy? Or perhaps "smug" is the right word to describe that look?

We were lucky enough to catch the elephants right when they were wading across the river

Nice tusks that elephant has. Too bad that there are people who don't understand that the tusks look better when sitting on an animal than anywhere else

Weed

This weed causes big problems. It grows very fast and can quickly "choke" a lake or a river

In the evening the river was spectacular

Really rough road

We ended up on a really rough road, one where we would have been much better off with a 4-WD than with the taxi we had.

We asked if we could see some of the factory. And we could.

In this device they make the tobacco bales. We guess a tobacco baler is the proper name for it.

That rock resembles a human skull, hence the name Skull Rock

Visst var det oväntat att Fantomen skulle bo i Malawi? Vi visste inte det vi heller. Vi hamnade där av en slump. /Åke

Nice tusks

These days, some keepers paint the tusks pink (rhinos too)) so they're of no value to poachers!

Off the beaten track
Glad you continue on our path of independence going to those countries few of us have experienced. Maybe some day. Thanks for taking us along.

Hippo

Those eyes!
Haha I love the 'side-eye' this Hippo is giving you! But I have to admit, I had to look at a map to see the exact location of Malawi... and I had never seen their flag before! :/ Looking forward to reading more about your adventures :)

Hippo

They are not too happy having us around
The hippos are not really comfortable having people around. But then, most wild animals aren't. They were constantly watching us and making sure we didn't get any funny ideas. /Ake

Happy travels in Malawi
It is more than 10 years we travelled through Malawi. We experienced it with friendly people, stunning an dbeautiful landscape. But we also saw the other side when we experienced live corruption, extreme poverty and difficulties by travelling with public transport. Anyway, it made a huge impact on us and was very interesting. Curious about more blogs of yout travels in the sausage country. By the way, the country not only has a sausage form, they also have many sausage trees!

Noticed little or none of the dark sides of the Force
We can't say that we noticed any corruption really. We suspected that some police officers were asking for bribes but were surprised when we couldn't verify that they were. Of course wo noticed some poverty, but only very little compared to many other countries we have been to. But yes, travelling on public transport was from time to time a bit of a challenge. We have one more blog entry left to publish from Malawi. It will go live within two weeks. /Ake

Nice time at the "sausage", LOL. Malawi is also a country I'd love to visit one day. I love those unexpected, unplanned things like what happened to you at the tabacco factory!
