After our incredible experience with Lake Nakuru we didn't think we could really do anything at Naivasha that would top it. So we took a relaxing day at the campsite and then went to Elsamere Centre for high tea and snacks. The previous day we spent the afternoon painting a classroom at a school project sponsored by Dragoman. It was nice to help out and we weren't swarmed with children like was the norm in Ethiopia. After Naivasha we drove back through Nairobi and then south to Arusha, Tanzania where we would begin our Serengeti and Ngorongoro experience.... read more

After Christmas we went down to Lake Naivasha with some friends from work. The lake is about a 2 hour drive from Nairobi in the Rift Valley. We stayed at a really cute little log cabin with open fire place. At night we weren't allowed off the balcony as the animals come up from the lake and graze. We saw zebras both nights coming up to feed. We were told that hippos come up to the cabin as well, but we didn't see any. The cabin was a stones throw away from the lake so on our first day there we went for a big walk and saw zebras, gazelles, hippos and baboons. Unfortunately the giraffes were being shy, but they're usually in the same area. The great thing about this lake is that it's close ... read more

After finishing our driving safari in the Masai Mara, we decided to take things a step further and do both a walking and biking safari. This time, there was nothing between us and the animals! After inquiring at our hostel, Crayfish Camp on Lake Naivasha, we were a little discouraged to find that the boat to Crescent Island was a whopping US$60. However, after more investigation, we found that Crescent Island is indeed not a real island, but more of a spit. Therefore, we ended up taking a matatu (local minibus) there for less than $1 each - that's more like it! The $10 entry fee was inclusive of a guide and was a small price to pay for what you got. As there are no big cats on the "island", it is one of few ... read more

I’ve spent a few days around Naivasha, curling up by the lodge’s fireplace and staring distantly toward the lake and trying to find a decent Internet connection in a town plagued by power cuts. In the morning the birds are chattering in the trees - trumpeting, trilling, piping their little lustful notes; at night, lured by tales of hippos prowling the lakeside, I stand in the deep, croaking dark, shining my headlamp toward the menacing reeds. There are a few lengths of electric wire roping off the campsite; a small, colorful sign warns: “DANGER! ZAP!” Last spring a Dutch woman was gored by a mother hippo protecting her offspring. She’d hopped across the fence and crept closer to take a few pictures; the mother - alarmed by either the bright flash or the tasteless walking sandals ... read more

I’ve rented a tent at Fisherman’s Camp, a popular campsite tucked behind the reeds on the shores of Lake Naivasha. The rain’s already let up as I stake my tent into the mud; there’s a riot of birdsong in the trees above me, squawks and trills and little calls of longing. Black-and-white colobus monkeys - their scrunched-up, Oriental faces taking me in with hostile regard - scratch and nibble at the scraps of fruit others campers have left behind. There’s a massive, thatched-roof restaurant at the far end of the site, music softly piping from the eaves, and a few tourists are sitting around in safari shorts and hiking boots, nursing coffees and staring out into the treetops. Because of the lake and the national parks nearby - Hell’s Gate and its dramatic gorge, the long-dormant ... read more

I just tried to upload afew photos, but the internet is a dial up and it would take me all afternoon, So only two photos and text. You still have to visit us at oude Wellington to see the rest ;o)) 28.06.07 “ red elephants and hungry lions” After breakfast we moved on to our first night in a Kenyan Game park Savo East National Park via Mombass along the coast. The ferry crossing and travel hrough town was uneventful. The outskirts of town are oper crowded, polluted and extremely busy with mtatats, busses etc, competing for every meter of unbroken tarmac. But we made it just fine and saw our first game by 16:00. We encountered a large family of red elephants. The soil in the park is deep red from iron and the ... read more

Oh boy! Would you look at the time? Well I sure as hell haven’t, and I threw out my watch a long time ago (well actually just put it away till I have to bring it out again so that I don’t miss another flight….) A long time has passed and I am still here in Kenya! Living the sweet life, I must add, as it is not ever day I get to walk with giraffe and wildebeest, impala zebra and waterbuck, but it is every day here! I left the densely populated Kisii highlands and, as beautiful as they were, sighed a breath of relief as I boarded my last matatu (minibus filled to the rim with big mammas, kids and chickens) to head back towards the Rift Valley and the splendor of farm life ... read more

Yes... this is where I rested up after my long flight over... what a bit of bliss!I have arrived finally in Africa. I have been here in Kenya for two weeks now and so much has happened... but unlike the Western world where the internet is at your fingertips and super speedy as well, it has been quite difficult to get to you all! Even now I have been trying to get going for over two hours after it took me two hours to get to the inernet cafe in the first place! So unfortunately I am not in the poetic mood that I wanted to be when I wrote this first entry from Africa. I also am working on another project (since I am now at the childrens home and it is actually 9.5.07) ... read more

Well, not quite. Last week we took friday off and headed up to Lake Naivasha which was about an hour's matatu ride from Limuru. Naivasha town is alot like Limuru except a nicer version with a better atmosphere. After buying our food for the next 3 days, we hopped onto another 45 min matatu to Fisherman's camp right on Lake Naivasha. The camp ended up being alot better than we had expected - flushing toilets, showers, boats, shops and a bar and restaurant. All of us realised that we had come totally unprepared as we all had hardly any money that we could spend. We wondered around the nearby town, bought some avocadoes, bananas, a pineapple, and our dinner - chapatis and mandazis (type of sweet bread). That night was horrible as we couldn't get ... read more
