My good friends Maggie annd Paul whom I met in Jordan had kindly let me stay at there house in Naivasha for a coulple of nights before I relocated to their other house in Nairobi before I caught my flight back to England. I say house in Naivasha but it is more like a safari lodge -very luxurious, especially compared to where I have been staying elsewhere on my trip. On the drive up to the house we drove past a hippo who was feeding outside the water at night!! On my first morning in Naivasha I had a wander round the lakeside, it was part of a private wildlife park but my hosts worked for the people who owned it. It was fantastic as it was very similar to Hells gate NP as you could ... read more

After yesterday's chillaxed vibe, in which peaceful hours spent at camp were punctuated only by laundry, internet and dinner at a cafe in the nearby village, today felt like a series of intense experiences barging into each other and vying for thought space. We'd decided to stay another day at Fisherman's Camp, partly because we didn't feel ready to leave (especially in an early departure!) and partly because we wanted to attempt a sighting of flamingoes at a place we knew only as "Little Lake," the location of which had only been described sketchily to us by a since-departed couple of travellers who told us the path (on private land) could never be found unless you knew where it was already. After a bit more asking around, we discovered that its real name is Lake Oleiden ... read more

There are so many spiders living in and on it that our tent (bright blue though it is) has practically become a part of the wildlife. The camp is teeming with life - thankfully not too much of the human kind, as we are enjoying the peace of so few other tourists that we have been fortunate to experience so far. From the tiniest ants though to giant but reclusive and antisocial hippos, and all in between, there is animal life all around us - all existing both alongside and also separate from each other, the various species observing individual patterns and paces of life, intersecting at various moments in time and space. Supporting them is the rich abundance and variety of plants and trees whose slow growth makes the animal movement seem wildly frenetic, yet ... read more

Jan 28  Day 13 Well I didn't sleep that well especially in he morning when it was freezing out but I didn't mind to much becaue it was so neat/cool to just sleep in a hammok under the stars. I got up early and did a work out to get my blood pumping.  We had a quick breaky and headed for lake navasha. We arrive around 5 hours later to a camp called fish eagle inn, where we wuickly made lunch and then went on a walkig safari which we had to pay for out of pocket.  We got to go on a little boat ride and see some hippos, although they were under water and all you could see was the top of their face and ears. Then we went for a walk in crater giraff ... read more

(Kovas writing) On the last day of our Kenyan trip, we spent the last of our money and food having a picnic at Hell’s Gate National Park. This park is fascinating because you can walk among the wild African animals like giraffes, zebras, warthogs, gazelles, impala, and baboons. Our driver, Milton, warned us to be careful of the baboons, but we had encountered baboons in other places and were confident that we could scare them away with loud noises. How wrong we were! We sat at the picnic table and hungrily unpacked the sandwiches, oranges, chips, and juice. Right before we unpacked the sandwiches, Rytas yelled ‘Babboon!’ In slow motion as we turned towards the baboon, it leaped over my mom’s head onto the picnic table. This male baboon was as big as eleven year old ... read more

Greetings! We've been busy traveling and having diarrhea. Here are some photos from a couple of sites we've seen. The first is from Hell's Gate near Lake Naivasha. It's a national park where you can chase down Thompson Gazelle and Zebra on a Huffy mountain bike from the 1980's. Lake Naivasha is nearby, famous for the flocks of tens of thousands of flamingos you may have seen on the Discovery Channel. The other set of pictures are from Island Camp at Lake Baringo where a quarky old British guy in a man-skirt named Perry gives you a tent and lets you hang out at his pool. Perry would qualify the term tent, however, its a 'luxury tent' complete with a bathroom and bed...fantastic for sitting in the hot sun and baking while your intestines try to ... read more

Nick got up early and went cycling around Hells gate National Park, I elected to stay in the tent!!! I picked my bike, very close to the Raliegh Mustang I had as a wippa snappa (and probably the same size too - i am in Africa!) we entered the park which was a short cycle away from the campsite, the landscape was unreal. The volcano had shaped the rock in mad way. We cycled past Zebras and chased wart hogs trying to see how close we could get to them. About 20k in we jumped of the bike and watched the steam rising from the hydro elec plants on hill sides. Before entering the gorge we removed our shoes to walk through the hot water. We climbed out of the gorge to take in more of ... read more

I spent the weekend at Lake Naivasha, a large lake situated in the Rift Valley about 100km northwest of Nairobi. The area is beautiful, but this was tempered somewhat by the dust - the area's soil is entirely composed of a fine, dry volcanic ash that gets kicked up into dust clouds with the slightest breeze. On Saturday I spent the day sightseeing I went to Hells Gate National Park, where I saw a fair number of wild animals and hiked some impressive gorges. In the afternoon I visited Crater lake, an algae-green lake that fills the crater of a dormant volcano. ... read more
