Well, this will be a more info packed than the average blog, because I haven’t had a lot of time at the computer the last 3 weeks. Tonnes of things have happened in that time, and honestly I don’t know where the time went. Week 8 was a fun time on marine. We saw lots of dolphins, had great weather, and I went out on the tourist dhow one of the days. A tourist dhow is a boat that takes around 20 tourists out to the Kisite Marine Park to do some snorkelling, and in the hopes of seeing dolphins. We snorkelled around Kisite island, and I saw a turtle swim by. The coral and amount of fish in the Marine Park is amazing. The colours are beautiful, and you can see the plants waving in ... read more

This has been an amazing week. It didn't start off like that though. I felt a little under the weather on Monday, so I stayed in bed for the day. On Tuesday I had a quiet day again. I stayed on base and helped input date from a previous expo. Wednesday and Thursday I was out on the boat. Both times we got out to the Marine Protected Area, called Mpunguti, and the Marine Park, Kisite. The snorkeling there is so much fun! Lots of amazing coral, starfish, sea urchins, and so many different kinds of tropical fish. There are literally thousands of them. Surgeon fish, and angel fish, and butterfly fish, and parrot fish, and clown fish, and many more that I can't even remember the names to. There are 2 snorkel transects on each ... read more

Well, I'm on the island of Wasini right now. I'm doing my time on the marine half of the project. It's very different from the Shimoni house. There is an actual base with different buildings, but since the town of Mkwiro is a stricter Muslim community all women have to cover their heads, as well as their shoulders and knees, when we leave the base. It has a beautiful spot to sit and watch the sunset. One fun activity we get to do almost every day is the water run. We don't have running water on base, so once a day we grab our water jerries, and walk down to the ocean to fill them up and carry them back to the house. We always have to time it to the high tide because we go ... read more

We went out to a new forest to do survey..........it was especially interesting (read gruelling) being the first group out there. The journey there was itself quite the adventure. Once one thing goes wrong, you know more things are going to go wrong. In fact, it almost makes me think you shouldn't go on. I guess some people are of different schools of thought. In any case, all the trouble really did lead up to some torture. Part of it was just my frustration because things don't always run very smoothly or according to schedual here. You really come to expect it, but it can be frustrating when you are in a time crunch for a deadline you feel obligated to make, even though it is irrelevant. But anyway, let's begin by getting in our vehicle. ... read more

I forgot to mention dirty feet. If you live on Wasini, your feet are never cleani. There is so much dust around that just gets kicked up, and if you are wearing sandals, sweating, have gone in the ocean, or put bug spray on your legs, the dust will attach to you. And if you try to clean your feet with water they will just be wet and the whole process will repeat itself. I have given up. There is also quite a bit of sand at the foot of my bed. In addition to the dirt, you are always salty. I have not yet had a bucket shower, I don't really see the point. Swimming/bathing in the ocean is just fine by me. It's quite comical when the tide is out and you are bathing ... read more

It's a little difficult to know where to start! So much has taken place in the past two weeks and it certainly feels like longer than that. I suppose that when you take out (most) modern technology and wake up at sunrise and keep busy, you can fit a lot into one day and it feels like weeks. There are certainly some highlights............like when I got stuck in a bathroom stall right before a lecture at the cottage. Someone later pointed out to me that that door didn't even have a handle. That freaked me out but after knocking on the door (I wasn't going to yell like an idiot) for awhile, they eventually realized I was gone and someone came to my rescue. Unfortunately I was starving because we had been in the forest all ... read more

Went to a beautiful island today. Surrounding the island is a Marine National park. The snorkelling is amazing. Fish and coral were awesome. Saw some bottle nose dolphins. The trip itself was a living nightmare of german tourists. I felt slightly outnumbered! Being a girl on my own has its downsides as well as its upsides though. I spent a lot of the day fending off the guide of the trip. But it's amazing how quickly the guys dissapear when you tell them you have a boyfriend or even better you are married! Actually, instead of camals i have been asked how many cows for marriage. The standard dowry here for the massai people is 30 cows. I explained it would be difficult to take them home on the plane and that mum and dad don't ... read more

The Marine and Wildlife Research and Community Development in East Africa. I had actually managed to make it across Africa, overland in 7 days and join the expedition on time. Next up was the trip back down to Shimoni right in the South East corner of Kenya. In other words back the way I had come a couple of days before!!! The journey took about 2 and a ½ hours. During which time I realised that I had lost my trusty fleece (which had doubled up as a pillow on more than one occasion), about 30 GBP and a sudoku book that I had been using to keep my mind busy. Damn. We got to Shimoni and started to prepare for Mkwiro village on Wassini Island, the place where we would be living for the next ... read more
