From Interesting Facts: Travel opens our minds, exposing us to new cultures, cuisines, and breathtaking landscapes. But with countless “must-see” destinations heavily promoted in the media, it’s easy to get swept up in the hype, sometimes leading to disappointing or overpriced experiences. This list isn’t about bashing any place; it’s about encouraging a discerning mindset. Some of these destinations are beautiful, but it’s essential to manage expectations and be aware of potential pitfalls like crowds, inflated prices, or misrepresentation in that heavily filtered social media feed. Unfortunately, I have been to my share of over-hyped places. I will list just a few of theirs, along with my comments. The classic whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches, and dramatic sunsets are postcard-perfect. However, astronomical prices and battling Instagram crowds... read more

First on the itinerary this morning was Christ Church Cathedral. The first church was built on this site in about 1030 by the Norse King Sitruic Silkbeard. The Anglo-Normans rebuilt and enlarged the church in the 12th and 13th centuries with it being elevated to a carthedral during this period. The cathedral underwent extensive restorations in the 1870s. Today the cathedral is a mixture of mediaeval and 19th century architecture. Using the Visitor Guide we explored the cathedral. The cathedral holds the tomb of Richard de Clare who was better known as Stongbow. He was one of the leaders of the Anglo-Normans who captured Dublin in 1170 commencing 800 years of British rule in Ireland. We worked our ways through the quire and the Chapel of St Laud admiring the original mediaeval tile on the floor. ... read more

We got up Thursday and found a place to eat a light breakfast, then headed back to the hotel to pack up and relax a bit. We then checked out and got a taxi to the port. Oh my, the taxi pulled up and the driver didn’t get out to open the door or help us with our luggage. Her driving was horrible. Foot on the accelerator, foot off quickly so it was the constant rocking motion, accelerate – slow down. We got to the port and again no help. The check in for Viking was great and we tendered to the boat on an Uber boat. Once on board we went straight to the activities desk to make changes. We got most of what we wanted changed and are waitlisted on 2 items. Then we ... read more

Since today was the last day in Copenhagen, I made sure to see the Little Mermaid statue. I’ve seen most everything I wanted to but hadn’t been down by the water there yet. Hans Christian Andersen was from Denmark and wrote the Little Mermaid. Hence the mermaid statue. It is a famous landmark and tourist attraction. It’s located by Fort Kastellet. I walked along the water and the Fort on my Way back and was pleasantly surprised to see an old windmill, lots of tulips, and lilacs in full bloom! I knew I would likely miss the lilacs blooming this year at home so I was happy to see and smell them. I finally found my danish on my way back to the metro to head back and get ready to head to the airport. Next ... read more

After we left Lisbon we had a 2 day voyage to London. On the Friday most of the day was taken up by rehearsals and the final choir concert. We had had an extra practice after we had left Lisbon on the Thursday, so Friday morning at 11am we did the final rehearsal. We were not sounding too bad!! We did a sound check in the Palladium, then had lunch and at 2-30 were back for the show. As before, the Ukulele band went first. I liked their name, A Band on Ship!! Then we joined them to sing We'll meet again. Then it was our turn. I sat in the second row as the weather was not good and the ship was rolling. Overall we did well. The song we were most worried about, The ... read more

My Hebridean adventure continues. I had intended to sail from Oban to Barra. However, as I was asking for the ticket in Calmac's office, the sales assistant pointed to the Ferry that was just setting sail. "That's it just leaving," he said. I never spotted the timetable changes on the website. I should probably plan ahead a bit better! This isn't the first time I've just missed the ferry to Barra. Fortunately, there was a ferry to Lochboisdale on South Uist in a couple of hours, so I booked that instead. A few hours later I was cycling south on South Usit towards Eriskey. I know I'd never be in time for the last ferry to Barra, so I took my time and enjoyed the scenery and the birdlife. In a couple of hours I clocked ... read more

This morning, we headed towards Dublin’s Georgian District in the south-eastern quadrant of the city. As we meandered in that direction, we passed St Werburgh’s Church and Dublin Castle. We will visit the castle another day but took the opportunity to venture into the courtyard this morning to take some photos before lots of tourists were about. As Dame Street merged into College Green we admired the Bank of Ireland building. It was challenging trying to take photos with end-to-end double decker busses motoring along the street! Perseverance paid off and photos of Ireland’s original Parliament Building were eventually taken. The bank has occupied the building since 1803 with Ireland’s Parliament being incorporated into the British Parliament in 1801. From the building that was once Parliament House we ventured around to Kildare Street where Leinster House ... read more

Today, Susan and I did an excursion to Stonehenge and Bath. Last night we went to bed before 8 but we needed to since we didn’t get any sleep last night on the plane. We were told to be at the pickup point at 8am but we arrived earlier so that we could get a bit of breakfast and our sodas. Well, we got there, got our pastry and diet cokes and got in line. The tour was supposed to leave at 8:30. It didn’t. Seems there is a train strike in the area and traffic was horrible. We left a bit later when our guide showed up. She kept making excuses for everything, but it started with why she was late. “they told me I should be there at 9…..” So we get on the ... read more

I dag er solskin! ☀️ I wore sunscreen and still a little pink. The sun felt amazing. First we headed down to Nyhavn. It is one of the most famously photographed locations in Copenhagen with the colorful houses. There are a plethora of restaurants along the street in front and the water runs along the other side. I encountered an artist painting in watercolor and left with one. I love chance encounters and art! Across the water is a little park with a little cafe, and the Opera House. We walked over and on the way back stopped at Hart (cafe) and it was SO nice to sit in the sun. It was only mid to high 50s, but it felt so much warmer. Next up was The Church of Our Savior tower. First let me ... read more

Here is a link to some of the photos. Still haven’t figured out how to update captions, which are part of the story so it’s annoying trying to find a user friendly platform many people can use. They’re also a bit scrambled but I don’t know how to move them yet either. https://www.flickr.com/photos/sunnyskate/ Amsterdam- • Anne Frank House not supposed to take photos, but I did take a photo of the scale model to the annex. The stairs are as steep as a ladder. • Boat tour - included the view of the seven bridges in a row, a house that was built around because the owner refused to sell, a façade of a building to make it ‘fit in’ better, the book at the top of the houses originallly used to hoist spices and goods, ... read more
