Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Rastatt February 18th 1972

Day 6 - 18th February 1972 Hedwig provided us with an excellent German breakfast - cheese, meat, bread and coffee - and then we went for a walk in the local park joining in a game of football. Our next student friend's home is south of Stuttgart and as she (Syvlia) will not finish at University for another day, we decide to head for Fruedenstadt - a town in the Black Forest. Hedwig gave us a nice packed lunch and kindly paid for a taxi to take us to a decent hitching point on the correct side of Rastatt. After 3 lifts to Gargennau, Forbach and then Fruedenstadt, I arrived in the town centre and only five minutes after Michael and Heather. This section of the journey was brilliant with beautiful scenery, winding roads high above ... read more

February 17th 1972 - Day 5 As we were staying in a student house, I guess it was no surprise that the last people got up fairly late which was strange having been used to the strict time restrictions at German YHs. One of Margit's friends called Regina (a stunning beauty)promised to take us for a ride so that we could see more of the countryside around Heidelberg. We were driven to a mount overlooking the city - the view was very picturesque but alas the hazeness prevented any reasonable photographs. We had a good walk around before returning to the Cafeteria for a healthy sized lunch - roast meat, vegetables, fruit and milk so very good value. As Regina and Margit had afternoon lectures it was time to move on with the next stop Rastatt ... read more

February 16th 1972 - Day 4 A nice easy start to the day for Heather and I as our new friend from Stuttgart had promised to drive us to Heidelberg. One and half hours later and we were there. We were going to stay at Margit's house very near to the Centre. Margit was one of the students whom we had met in Bournemouth whilst she was studying English. Michael helped her with English conversation and Margit joined our social group during her stay. I did remember with some embarrassment that on her last evening, she picked some daffodils from the central park in Bournemouth to give to her B&B owner - ah well no harm really ! Margit had already left with Michael and so we talked with some of the students staying at the ... read more

February 15th - day 3 St Goar was an ideal place to have stopped overnight because it was opposite the Lorelei Rock which is the narrowest point of the Rhine. We admired the view before hitching South to Bingen and from there by ferry across the Rhine to Rudesheim. I travelled with Heather today. This region is certainly a beautiful part of Germany with the Rhine running through a long narrow gorge and the hillsides full of old buildings. Rudesheim was notable for its historic buildings and a couple of castles. Unfortunately we arrived on a Bank Hoilday and most of the shops and the cable car were closed. After a shortened look around we decided to press on towards Heidelberg. However it was not a good hitchhiking day. The first car took us close to ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Koblenz February 14th 1972

Monday 14th February 1972 - day 2 Breakfast at the Hotel was rolls, preserves and coffee - cleary it is time to get used to continental breakfasts not English style. My room and breakfast was DM12.50 which at the exchage rate of DM8=£1 means an overspend on Day 1 - still after the long journey from London, it was worth having a treat. We left the hotel and headed for the River Moselle and then walked along the river bank until we reached the confluence with the Rhine. This area seems to be the centre of Koblenz and the square where the carnival procession starts. We sat and watced the preparations in the warm sunshine and then followed the procession. The floats were very imaginative and decorative. The people on the floats threw sweets and oranges ... read more

Sunday February 13th - day 1. It is 7am on Sunday morning and I am too nervous to eat much breakfast. It is time to pack the rucksack with the final items and to use this opportunity to leave a few more items behind. Arrived at London Victoria train station at 9.15am which means it is only 45 minutes before the train leaves. Three of us are starting this journey - Michael (an old school friend from Bournemouth), Heather (his girlfriend) and myself. There are about 10 people standing on the platform to wave us goodbye - relatives and friends - who knows when we will see them again? We have reserved seats and in 12 hours time we will have arrived at our first destination Koblenz which is situated at the confluence of the Rhine ... read more

It is 41 years ago that I was sitting in my flat in London counting down the hours before my 4 month trip to Australia started. I guess it is the same for most people but chance played a big part. I had started a new job which did not live up to expectations as instead of career development, I was required to spend months learning the company ways starting at the bottom of the ladder. Luckily an Aussie girl was temping in the office and she created the desire to travel. My flatmates and I returned from the pub one night and there was an advert on TV for the £5 emigration package to Australia. We decided to investigate but by the time I had collected paperwork from the Aussie High Commission, the other three ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Blois August 22nd 1970

From Milan, we flew to Paris where we met another coach and a new local guide. Without missing a beat, or a stop in Paris, the group set out for the Loire Valley and its famous château country. It was a Friday afternoon and everyone was rushing to leave Paris for the weekend. Valene appeared to be getting along well with the local guide and complimented her on her chic attire. However, there evidently had been some sort of falling out overnight. By morning, the local guide had split, and was on her way back to Paris. Valene took over courier's seat and microphone. From our base in Tours, we were able to visit four château: Amboise (16th century), Chambord (1547), Chenonceaux (1522), and Azay-le-Rideau (1527). I returned to Chambord and Chenonceaux in 2015. Wonderful as ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Oberammergau August 5th 1970

Oberammergau, Germany, is the location of the famous Passion Play produced every ten years. The tradition began in 1634 in thanksgiving for the town having been spared during the Bubonic Plague. The play is cast and produced entirely by the residents of this Bavarian town. I was fortunate to be able to be there to see the 1970 production of this legendary, and often controversial, dramatic work. In Oberammergau, the townsfolk open their homes to the throngs of visitors coming to see the play. We stayed with a family at their home right in the town. Our homestay family consisted of a mother, father, and teenage daughter, about 17. Dad and daughter were in the play, but not Mom. They kindly provided meals as well as a place to stay. Cast members all had color photo ... read more

Europe » Luxembourg » Luxembourg City July 28th 1970

A visit to Luxembourg was the prelude to seeing Germany, Austria, Italy, and France in summer 1970. At that time, the cool way to travel from the USA to Europe was via Loftleidir Icelandic Airlines. Loftleidir flew from New York to Reykjavík and then on to Luxembourg, offering pioneering discount transatlantic airfares. Traveling this way, a one-night, one-day stopover visit to Iceland was added as a bonus and Luxembourg became the first country one encountered on the continent. We indeed had spent a day in Reykjavík to see the city, the geysers, and wooden churches in the countryside. And a bit of flightseeing. Then it was on to the Continent the following day, with the first stop Luxembourg--another definite bonus. I'd first known about Luxembourg through reading the book Five Little Countries of Europe. It was ... read more
