Was browsing some stuff, stumbled on this:

Who\'s the Worst Plane Passenger?

and found it hilarious! Everyone\'s had a really horrible seatmate on the plane, how about you? Care to share your experience? (mine was a huge guy who ate up some of my seat....) Reply to this

Hello Sarah 😊

I had to sit beside a guy who kept getting into aruments with everybody around for a flight from London to Brazil.
He got into arguments when the stewartess did not give him salt with his food, when another passenger left their bag too close to his and I cant remember what else. He would even ask me about things I like and dont like and then get into arguments with the air stewartess about what I did not like. I think he thought he was standing up for me. :D

I sat next to a guy on a flight coming home from Palm Springs who absolutely smelled worse than anyone I thought possibly could. It was just a horrible horrible smell of body oder and sweat and he was larger so he was somewhat infringing on my seat too. I was in the middle seat so I couldn't even lean towards the window for some breathing room. I'm sure it wasn't his fault but thank goodness it wasn't a longer flight (the only time I've been glad to have a connection, just so I could get off the plane and away from the smell). I remember one of the firsts flight I ever took that I could remember I was 11 and I got sat next to a boy maybe 18 yrs old on a flight back to Vancouver, BC from London, England. All trip he complained to me that my video game was to loud, I was using up all the arm rest, he could hear my music through my earphones etc etc....

So about 1 hour before we land he disappears in to the bathroom for AGES. After about 30 minutes the flight attendants knock to see if he's alright and he is in a full fledged panic attack. They even broadcasted "Is there a doctor on board" and everything (which I still remember being impressed with that they really do say that not just on TV!!) All witnessed by myself of course as we were right by the washrooms.

I still wonder if that experience is what made me a nervous flyer, because I certainly had no problems up until then and I've gotten increasingly edgy since. I think nervous seat mates to me are the worst because they just feed my nerves. Reply to this

I've been stuck in the middle seat of a plane as well, and it wasn't good. It was also a 9 hour flight, but seemed a lot longer than that. The lady to the right of me was rather large, unshowered, and kept falling asleep on my shoulder. The guy on the left of me was about 7 feet tall and took up so much leg room that between the two of them, I was squished and could barely move. The guy and his friends in the aisle over (a total of 6 of them) also got really drunk and kept laughing at all the movies they played. It was funny at first, but 9 hours later, very annoying. I just don't know how funny documentaries about wild animals or music videos are.

But on the same token, I've been "that" girl that has probably annoyed some people too. On that same trip, I had a horrible, persistent cough that just would not go away. On one flight, a woman actually gave me a pack of cough drops to help lessen the annoyance. She was fairly understanding, but I don't think the rest of the people on board felt the same way. They kept their distance and gave me very nasty looks. Reply to this

I've sat next to people who have BIG elbows, smell and all that, including having people constantly 'wake' you up en route to the toilet when you're in the aisle seat. The most annoying (but couldn't be helped) one was last September, when I was FINALLY on my much anticipated Round the World trip en route to Bangkok and the girl next to me was very friendly, but almost immediately confided that she had a stinking cold, and yes, 2 days later I had a stinking cold which lasted for the first 2 weeks of my trip... so I saw Thailand, Laos and the first part of Vietnam through a bit of a haze! I don't really recall any really bad seat mates. There was one where I had the bad luck to be stuck up against a windowless bulkhead with a badly handicapped man next to me that I couldn't squeeze around - It was a long flight and I was unable to get up out of my seat to stretch my legs or go to the restroom. I know it wasn't his fault, so I can't call him a bad seat mate, but my bladder was on the verge of exploding when I got to my destination.

I have also been the bad seat mate on at least one occasion: I had spent the day out on the ocean fishing and it took us a little longer to get back in to the harbor than we had planned. There was no time to go and get cleaned up, or even to change clothes. I just rushed to the airport and ended up being the last person on the plane. I stunk of fish and BO and salt to the level that even I noticed it and my only carry-on bag was a large, plastic wrapped slab of fish on ice. To make matters worse, it was a full flight and I was in the middle seat. Missing the flight was not an option, so I just apologised profusely - I certainly didn't make any friends on that flight!

I actually thought of another one which was way worse. Again it was not there fault, but I was coming back from Australia and was sitting next to a family of 4. During the first hour of the flight, 3 out of the 4 started getting horribly sick (throwing up in their "vomit bags") etc... this lasted for quite a while until they were finally moved somewhere else on the plane (not sure why, perhaps being near the back of the plane was adding to their illness). It was not at all their fault and I felt bad, but listening to three people get sick for a few hours, not to mention the smell making me almost get sick, was not very fun, esp at the start of a 14 hour flight!

I'm sure most of us have at one point or another been that bad seat mate (I have a bad bladder and have certainly had to climb over seats to get past people when I'm not in the aisle seat), but it's still fun to compare stories! Reply to this

I am probably the "worst seatmate". I have to go to the bathroom constantly. I listen to my music loudly. I'm a (helpless) chatterbox...and I'm restless- I've got to constantly move around. I can easily get plane sick (just short of vomiting). But, I will give myself this: I am cheerful and polite- and can be an engaging conversationalist, provided there is some next to me who is also. There's a middle-aged American woman who sits next to me on almost every US flight. She is square-bodied, has short, dishwater colored or greying hair, and wears a disapproving scowl, as if she somehow knows I'm not a stay-at-home-get-a-real-job-and-have-kids-like-a-normal-person person. I made the mistake of talking to her once and had to hear stories about all her children and grandchildren, and then I had to justify my lifestyle. I'm trying not to be paranoid, but I think she's stalking me. Thankfully, I'm rarely in the US anymore and she's too afraid of terrorists to travel overseas. 😉 Reply to this
