I lived for 2 years in India so am used to roughing it. I'm keen to go to countries with distinct cultures that are a bit of a challenge, so that rules out Western Europe and Austalia, Canada, USA, NZ.
Any ideas?

Joseph
Reply to this You would get very far with the money you have saved up traveling in South East Asia. I am currently in Laos and LOVING it.
Reply to this Iceland is a good place to go. I enjoyed my trip there.

Reply to this If you want a distinct culture - try Japan - I'm pretty positive that there's nowhere in the world quite like it. Admittedly not the first place that springs to mind when you think of the phrase "roughing it" but, for a rough around the edges, cultural immersion experience that saves your money, you should try WWOOFing Japan (working on organic farms).
Reply to this Africa is also amazing. I am South African. South Africa is a mixture of first and third world. Southern Africa is stunning, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia are really beautiful and Zimbabwe is just as great, I'm not sure how welcome you will be with a British passport.
You should have an excellent trip on $10,000 in Africa.
Africa can be dangerous if you aren't careful but it is so in any country. Africans (black & white) are very friendly and helpful, please just investigate the political situation before going into a country, e.g Kenya at the moment. You also need to read and ask about safety, like in South Africa it can be dangerous to travel by train in certain cities but to travel from Jo'burg to Cape Town by train is a marvelous trip
