You get home after an active trip, step on the scales, are amazed at how much weight you've lost, but in the next few days........ (read on)
I have a problem.....
Most of my trips involve using up loads of energy: walking, hiking, sports, cycling,.......mainly cycling........ very long distances.
Then, when I get back home with a trim figure and no beer-belly, feeling proud of myself as I step off the scales.......... the trouble begins..,
I scoff like a pig as if I were still on the road, but this time with no physical exertions to burn off the calories.
I mean, what inspired me to write this was the fact that yesterday I just got back from another great bike trip, and now, in the last 20 mins at my computer, I've just gorged down 5 X 100g bars of Milka chocolate!
Am I the only one out there?
Does anyone sympathize with me here?
Several months of hard work down the drain in just a few days.....
Anyway, must go now, I'm dyin for a pizza!
Reply to this Great topic mate,
I remember a Baffin Island Crossing trek, two weeks with nasa food, a 80-pound backpack and no alcohol... Same day I landed in Toronto, I drank so much beer that I quickly got back all the lost weight.
But I found the solution! Go travelling places where food is great, like Vietnam or South America. Your feet will be happier because they'll spend more time under a table, you'll gain weight and when you'll come back home you won't be so hungry!
Must dash.. cheese fondue today!

Reply to this for the average exchange student the situation is reversed
i.e. going up 10kg in 2 months, or a size in a week is considered common
hmmm....
Reply to this I've been comfort-eating because I miss travelling so much.
With the same four walls around me, and the same town outside every day, I've put on a stone in the year since I got back, from feeling empty and uninspired. The answer of course should be to read a dozen diaries on travelblog every time I feel a maltesers craving - if only I'd worked it out sooner!

Reply to this Well it definately works the other way for me. Despite all the walking and activity, I'm good for 15-20 pounds a trip!
Reply to this I've definitely gained weight on this trip, but on my other more 'trekky' ones I've lost it...I was chatting to someone the other day who said they thought guys lost weight when they travelled whereas girls gain it. Doesn't strike me as being fair....!
Reply to this > they thought guys lost weight when they travelled whereas girls gain it
Muscle weighs more than fat... so maybe girls are putting on muscle and the guys losing it...
Reply to this i just love to eat all of the local food and hey i am on vacation so screw the belt notches.... life is too short!i plan to hit the gym when I get home!
Reply to this Well its weird cuz for the last year Im stuck in the office 14 hours/day usually, I only eat 1 meal/day but I ve still managed to put on weight. During my 2 weeks vacantion I ate 3 meals/day (traditional food with lots of calories) but being all day on the road since day 3 I noticed Im loosing weight. Now Im back in the "cage" and do my best to give up this sedentary lifestyle... like someone said: keep on walking !!!
Reply to this I am travelling all over South America and became the personifiation of tonedness until I hit Argentina, where I discovered 14 course steak dinners, eat-as-much-as-you-like buffets and delicious offal, all alongside a strict no-exercise lifestyle.
If you really are concerned about keeping that weight down, my advise (and I'm no doctor) is to pick yourself up a decent tapeworm in the Amazon. Failing that, Bolivia has a great selection of food poisonings to chose from.
Gotta run, I can hear the ice-cream man......
Reply to this No sympathy from me! I've put on about 10 lbs. (4 kg) since leaving home in August. No matter how active I try to be, these schwarma night-caps in the Middle East have just wreaked havoc on the waistline. Hopefully things will turn around in Africa. Malaria diet, anyone?
Reply to this The secret I think is to pretend you are a penniless backpacker. When I went to live in Japan and was working there I put on almost 10kg in 6 months because I was getting paid reasonably well. After that though I went to study and travel in Spain and as my funds got lower my meals got smaller and I had lost it all after another couple of months
Reply to this All I did was pick up a bit of crypto spiridian in Galway, ireland. That was good for about 6 kgs. Have kept it off for a few months now cycling a fair bit. So, maybe just go around licking door handles or train windows to shed those extra unwanted kilo's 😉
Reply to this Thanks for the posts guys...
Interesting stuff you've said but, Aaron and Emma, don't think I'll do the doorhandles business - I'm just gonna drink less beer and see if that works.

Reply to this I've been back a little over and month and have to join Weight Watchers! I walked all over China and here I drive everywhere. My good resolutions to do more walking for exercise don't help when the temperature in Atlanta is almost 100 f. every day. starting next week I'll have to weigh everything I eat--a glass of wine, a glass of wine, a pretzel, etc.
Reply to this This is such a great topic!! The whole time my boyfriend and I were away ( a year long trip) there were comments about how thin we were looking in our snaps on travelblog. So as soon as we get back (3 weeks ago) everyone is feeding us up. As a result Matt put nearly a stone on in a week!!! My weight is going up gradually as we both lost a good stone in total over the year but we probably needed to put a bit back on...
Everyone needs to comfort eat after a fab trip though as its so hard coming home... so keep grabbing the cake and biccies! That's what I say any how! We'll all lose it again on the next trips so no worries!

Reply to this I agree with Campo (msg#4). For me the only way to combat the travel withdrawl symptoms is to start thinking about the next trip.
