Volunteer Community/Aid Work

Who has done this kind of work in Asia or Sth/Central America? Can you recommend any worthwhile programs, or offer any words of wisdom to help with choosing a good one?

Hello all, it’s really nice to see you all want to volunteer, so am I.
Beginning of the August I start a new project, called “ The Heaven on Earth”. It’s about locating Heaven ( all the most breathtaking beautiful places ). Travel & discover those places. We also focus about global warming, and find out most of these places are in danger, will go underwater.
After designing the site, got various reply, reviews and some award, was really inspiring. The site contains travel photographic journey, or campaign and a community. And now we need volunteer. I am hoping to see you all there soon. I believe we all can start a new journey together.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions!

I've opted to do some work through a school and shelter for disadvantaged women in a village called Shillong in the Eastern part of India (on the other side of Bangladesh). It's only a short stint because I'm concerned I might find the experience too confronting and frankly -I'm not sure I'm cut out patience-wise to work with children!! In all seriousness though, hopefully this will give me a taste of this type of aid work - what it entails and whether its something I want to do more of. Thanks again, Ellen Reply to this

That’s great Ellen, Shillong is a beautiful place, one of my most favorite, just situated in the downhill of great Himalayan mountain.
To reach Darjeeling, it will took just around 3 and half hours hardly, so a day long trip to Darjeeling is the most thrilling part, living in Shillong.
The rain, downhill endless tea garden will lets you redefine about the world. I am a native Bangla speaker, and leaves in Bangladesh. If you need any help, just inform me.

Hey,

this is by far the best link for volunteering in south america that i have found. the entire policy of this organisation is to put you in touch with VERY reasonably-priced, even dirt cheap, grass-roots NGO's in cental/south america that really make a difference and understand that it is your participation and not just your money that makes a difference:

www.volunteerlatinamerica.com

you have to pay for the information booklet, but tha's because it's tailored to the kind of regions/volunteering you want to do.

Good luck Reply to this

I will be in Siem Reap, Cambodia for about 2 weeks this February. Has anyone volunteered with a social service agency there that you'd recommend? I have experience in English language instruction, counseling, and have a particular interest in HIV/AIDS. Reply to this

Exciting community permaculture project in south west London involving lots of gardening, workshops and outreach to the local community. This year we are developing two new growing sites, establishing a plant nursery and building multiple composting sites & compost toilets. We'll also be starting sustainability workshops in the reclamation centre, harvesting the local nettles, oil making and wild food mapping. In return for 4-5 hours work per day during the week (with breaks and days off!), volunteers will have their own room, meals and access to internet. The house is located within a short walk of Gunnersbury Tube station (on the district line), and nearby the picturesque environment of the Thames, Kew Gardens & Richmond park. Volunteers will be encouraged to take part in all aspects of community life. Ideally looking for people with experience in growing, traditional hand or craft skills or permaculture - enthusiasm is a must!
