If you are going to backpack then -
Pack Light: India is crowded and lacks space most of the time. You don't want to end up with a huge back with no place to keep it.
Trust people: They might look, sound and seem scary but if you trust them enough to talk to them they will help you.
Learn to say NO like you mean it: Because sometimes people don't understand polite. Polite = sissy. So, say NO.
Eat local to save money and get better taste
Read about the place you are going to to get a fuller experience. As in besides the museums and palaces.
