It wasn't necessarily a trip that was cut short but our 2nd year teaching in China. We had been in China for 3.5 months when we found out that my father in law was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma cancer that was in his brain and lungs. We were on a plane 10 days later moving back to the US. We were so thankful that we up and moved back as he died 3.5 months after his diagnosis.

Our trip was meant to last 13 months. We planned and saved for it for 3 years. It was all I thought about for 3 years but after only 4 months on the road we both stopped enjoying ourselves and decided to come home. We have been home over a month now and I still think about it everyday, 'did we do the right thing'. I don't know yet but I do know the things that stopped us enjoying it are still there so i'm happy with our decision for the moment.

My last blog from our trip is here

In response to: Msg #152084 Tina and Rob, don't feel guilty about stopping your trip early. There is no reason to go on if you are miserable. I think I would stop enjoying a long trip after awhile. I much prefer having lots of shorter trips.

First, you don't blow your entire savings on one climactic journey, and then have nothing left to look forward to. I'm always looking forward to the next trip.

Second, on long trips pretty soon everything becomes a blur with mixed memories.

Thirdly, I like a break between seeing regions of very different cultures; prefering to do each continent as a separate trip so that I can savor the last trip before going on the next. I also do alot of research before each trip; reading as much as I can about the place. That's hard to do when you are planning to see everything over 1-3 years.

So regroup, and in awhile, if the travel bug hits again, try a month or two and see a new continent. I had been following your blogs and was disappointed, but understood your reasons. I hope to see your blogs again when you are up for it.

Anyway, to answer the question, one trip that I had to cut short was a trip to Russia as blogged at Business Trip to Moscow. Reply to this
