Name the country that you have visited and that is, in your opinion, the dirtiest in the world.

I'm sure some countries are not really dirty. They are just disorganized and have many things that they don't know where to put.

In response to: Msg #164725 Theroadiscalling recent blogs on their travels around India. Chris and Amy are also a must read for those contemplating the backpacker mode of travel in India. Recent news stories only confirm the general attitude by many Indian men as presented in these blogs.

As for Lagos, I've never been there so can't compare it to other cities. I'm sure some African countries and cities are also good candidates.

I have ever visit Moscow. In this city, you can pay $3,000 a month for an apartment that doesn't even have clean running water, Moscow also has troubling levels of air pollution, which present a daily strain on lung health.

FYI, it can be measured by mercer health and sanitation index score.

I agree that India is dirty but its beauty somehow overshadows it :-) It can win for the street dirt, that for sure...Looking back I think Burma had dirtiest rooms (comparing budget accommodation only of course), China had worst toilets (train stations, OMG) and as someone mentioned it here already Bolivia had this awful urine smell everywhere...

Some parts of China are also very dirty. They even have comfort rooms wherein you have to squat in order to pee. These comfort rooms are very ancient and they really do stink. I sure hope China will replace these comfort rooms with modern ones if they want to keep up with other countries.

Most of you said that India is the most dirtiest county. You give me more reason why I need to go there. Maldives is so beautiful, and I want to experience scuba diving on their coral reef. Reply to this

I certainly agree that topics such as this do not take away from passion for travel. I find that it actually fosters it. Discussing which country you found the dirtiest helps you reflect on your travels. If you are appalled by filthiness, experiencing it will only help you greater appreciate the other places you have traveled to.

From my experiences, I would certainly say India is the dirtiest. When I say dirtiest, I am talking about the trash that just gets pilled up outside and seems to be everywhere. While India is the dirtiest country that I have been to by far, it is also my favorite country to travel to. The culture is simply majestic and the people are great. Also, do not let the dirtiness of the ground lead you to the assumption that Indian people are also dirty themselves. This is so far from the truth. Indian people take great pride in their sanity. Regardless of socioeconomic standing, Indians do all they can to maintain a clean body, clean clothes, and clean hands.

The beauty is, this issue of garbage got me asking questions. I learned a bit about why it is such an issue: I spoke with an excellent aryuvedic doctor in Darjeeling, and he said that throwing your trash out the window, on the ground, etc. is simply such an ingrained cultural habit. He is not enthusiastic about this habit but is not bothered enough to actively work to stop it. It was also explained to me that the folks that are employed to do trash removal often get fed up with how little they are being paid, so they go on strike. As they are on strike the garbage continues to grow until the government finds the amount of garbage to be unacceptable and increases their wages. Apparently, this happens quite frequently.

I hope you all take these discussions as a great way to develop appreciation and perhaps further learn why these conditions exist!

Safe and exciting travels!

Sorry for India, but my vote goes for India. Although I spent a wonderful and exciting time there - and want to come back again. I just accepted dirtiness as natural part of the country and it was not disturbing me. Reply to this

Knowing that India is dirty did not prevent us from going there but better prepared us for what we would see. India has charms that make you want to be there to enjoy all that is India.
