Booking flights in Asia - transport as you go

Have you successfully booked flights as you've travelled across Asia and are there good deals to be had?

I almost had heart failure today when a travel agent told me my flight itinery if booked now would cost me £1800 I am sure there is a cheaper way to do this plus it is not feasible for me to book now as i dont know how long I am going to stay in each place.

I'm going to be travelling for 5 or 6 months from the beginning of June 11. I will fly from Rome to Kerala (India) and then work my way north with trekking in Nepal at the end of this leg of my journey. My plan was then to fly from Delhi to Yangon but I have since learnt that I would need to fly to Bangkok first and then catch another flight back (has anyone done this?) From Yangon I would then fly back to Bangkok, I am planning to travel south first then head up to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and back down through northern Thailand all of which as far as I know I can do by land. From there the plan is to fly to KL and then KL (fly?) to Borneo, my final destination is Australia - obviously this is another flight.

Is my rough transport plan ok and where a flight is necessary how easy is it to book flights whilst being on the road? I have read that it can be cheaper to book flights in Asia is there anything I need to be aware of?

Welcome your feedback, thoughts, comments etc

Cheers

Hi Natasha - I used to book tickets before I left and usually end up ringing airlines and changing them - all airlines other than Air Asia seem to be very flexible...I now book tickets 24 hours prior from the airline direct. Ive used Vietnam Air, Royal Cambodian Airlines, Nok Air, Flower Air, Air Nuigini and Malaysian and Thai airways from my hotel room and have had no problems getting on flights that day or the next. It generally is cheaper to book flights in Asia but watch the KL to Aus flights if you are booking in KL at the airport - do it on their website, make sure you are not going to have connecting flight hassles as Air Asia are a point to point carrier and will not refund your money if their planes are delayed resulting in you missing a flight. You can book flights with the budget airlines like Air Asia as you go. Check out the list of budget airlines in the area on Attitude Travel .

As Cindy says, if you are planning flights with changes of airline, be aware of the restrictions of the budget carriers. Whilst Air Asia are now checking in baggage for the whole journey for a few routes, you usually have to collect your baggage and check it in again if you book several legs of one flight.

Sometimes it it even cheaper to book the 'full fat' airlines as you go than to use the budget carriers. When you add on the extras like baggage for the budget airlines it's sometimes cheaper.

It's very easy to book flights on the road. It depends on how fixed and organised you want to be. If you decide to change your route during your trip, will your pre-booked flights allow you to do this?

Thanks Natasha..its actually a nickname Ive had for hmm..28 years...Its an old Jimi Hendrix ballad. In my days of playing in bands many years ago we used to do the song and one night..a very vodka stained night..Aussie pub rock in those days revolved around drinking - sometimes we only got paid in Alcohol - I fell off the stage while we were playing the song...right at the intro where the lyrics are -

"Well shes walking thru the clouds, with a circus mind, thats runnin round,
Butterflies and Zebras, Moonbeams n Fairytales..thats all she thinks about,
Riding with the wind - Fly on littlewing"

It stuck - Im ok with that :-)
