We're reading 'Dreaming of Jupiter' at the moment
Reply to this Jupiter's Travels and Dreaming for Jupiter are on my list and so is Travels in the Interior of Africa. I'm likely to order all three upon returning to Australia in the New Year.
Reply to this Excellent!
We'd love to have more reader's along with us.

Dark Star Safari is about Theroux's overland trip from Cairo to Cape Town. I got to page 55 then got distracted (almost two years ago) and need an excuse to pick it up and start over. I just ordered Dreaming of Jupiter so hopefully I can start on that this weekend.
How far into Dreaming of Jupiter is everyone?
Reply to this Hi Anastasia,
Dreaming of Jupiter is the 2nd book written by this author. It is a follow up to his first book. I don't think you have to read the other book first although I always like to read them in order. We just recently finished the first book. I'm about 40% into Dreaming of Jupiter so you have plenty of time to catch up.
Reply to this I just received Mungo Park's
Travels in the Interior of Africa in today's mail. Might wait until I am travelling again to read it.
Reply to this Shane, I had a look at it in
goodreads (my favorite site to find new books) and it looks very interesting.
I like reading explorer's books because traveling was so different back then... also the mind set of people in the early 20th century was very different!

Reply to this I've finished Dreaming of Jupiter....it took me forever because work has been busy, I'm in school and I didn't like it nearly as much as the first one. I guess that is true of most sequels or 2nd books. I was hopeful but .....alas, just not as good.
I am going to start reading Holy Mountain in the next couple of days. I was going to read it a few months ago and got side tracked.
We will be completely out of school by the end of April and my reading minutes will increase substantially.
Can't wait.
Reply to this @D M Binkley - You'll love Holy Mountain, it is a really tremendous read.
@denidax - As for reading explorer books, if you want a challenge try Sir Richard Burton's lengthy tale of disguising himself as an Afghan called Mirza Abdullah and undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medinah in
A Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Medinah and Meccah even though he was not a Muslim. Burton's verbosity at times does not detract from a remarkable tale.

I disguised myself as an Afghan to visit the inner sanctum of Imam Reza shrine in Mashad, Iran. I use the word 'disguise' lightly however, as I'd just spent the previous six weeks in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and so was already 'in disguise' at the time.

Even though I was one of the first to join the website, I had a lengthy travel career
before Travelblog, Shane 😱
Mexico to Brasil overland (via The Darien Gap) 2001
India to South Africa overland (via everything in between) 2002/2003
I would really love to elaborate more, however I am currently in the process of attempting to elaborate more about my travels in 2011!

I know what you mean! 😉
I have plenty of stories from the 1990s which have never been placed in writing. Though that will change next month when I post my first tale "From the Vault" about a particularly memorable experience in Turkey in 1992.
Reply to this ...1992? Showing your age there Shane.
An Australian in Turkey, publishing a "particularly memorable experience" twenty years on, "next month" (April).
I won't spoil the surprise 😱
Reply to this If you go to East Africa, I think the best two books you should bring is "Rules of the Wild"! I love this book!
Reply to this Long time no see good books out. Difficult to get ah

The Travel Camel has received Mungo Park's "Travels in the Interior of Africa" in the mail..."Might wait until I am travelling again to read it"...he says.
I'll look forward to hearing how you like it.
The attitudes to slavery of those times I found challenging...but transport you to another time & place it does.
