Hello Tzui 😊

What's your bad habits for being a tourist or traveller?

I smoke more when I travel, expecially when I am in a country where there are inexpensive ciggies. When at home, I only smoke 2 to 3 per day. When travelling it can be 2 to 20 per day.

I have never been guilty of over packing. In fact, I may have done the opposite. In my early days of backpacking I took little care about staying warm and dry at night. I didnt even carry a sleeping bag, because I already thought my tent was taking up too much room in my bag. I spent a lot of not warm and not dry enough nights, before I discovered that even 20 year olds can have reprecusions, when they dont take care of their health.

In the early days, I also didnt try enough, to eat properly when I travelled. I never had weight problems because of it, but I think backpacking can be tiring and sometimes stressful, and backpackers should pay attention to what they eat, to stay fit and energetic for the whole trip and after it.

I slack, when it comes to making sure I have something to wear to keep the sun off me. It is very unwise to rely completely on suncream in the tropics.

Have you ever felt guilt or bad during travel?

Not really, unless I think I am stretching my finances too much, by going on too many trips. These days though, I often manage to put on the breaks, and consider all the things I will have to scrimp on at home, if I buy more than a sensible number of trips.

What did other tourists do that you think is really annoyed?

There isnt much about them that bugs me. They are doing what I love to do. I suppose, the thing I dont like these days is when they want me to join in all their activities and judge me if I dont. I just dont want to spend my travel days climbing up mountains, hiking through jungles..., and I dont want to drink all night every night either. Nothing wrong with doing nothing, as far as I am concerned - 'the art of doing nothing' is what those who see the point of it might call it.

Thank you very much, Mell.
Your answer help my project a lot.
It is really interesting that you said you smoke more during travel.
Somehow, people feel that they can enjoy and relax more in holiday.
I am quite interested in the psychology aspect of this kind of thinking.
Thank for sharing your experiences.

Smoking

I associate smoking with hanging out in cafes and bars, and chatting with people, and while travelling I do this a lot more than when not, so it causes more smoking, especially if the person or people I am chatting with are smokers.

When something I dont like happens or is happening, I generally tell myself I deserve a few extra smokes, as a consolation prize for having to put up with this. Sometimes, something nice to eat, that I would not be having otherwise, to preserve my waistline is the consolation prize. Adverse things happening is sometimes part of travelling, and it makes smoking therefore a part of it.

If I dont get enough sleep, I generally have some extra smokes too. Sometimes, I stay up all night, when I have an early morning flight, to prevent things such as getting locked into the guesthouse because the staff are not up yet, or just not waking up on time. Smoking and reading is usually the form of entertainment I choose to keep me awake. Reply to this

Naw, not really. I mean there are some mistakes I've probably made along the way, mostly to do with cultural differences. But the people that I was with understood that I was an American tourist, and that I just do that. lol As long as I learned from my mistakes, they didn't have a problem with it.

I probably have a lot of them. One that I don't think of as bad, but I could probably improve on, is to socialize more. I still travel alone when I can, and I just don't interact with people much. But then, I miss out on learning about the culture when I do that. Doesn't help when I'm trying to learn a language. Which is probably a lot of why I don't retain it. lol

What did other tourists do that you think is really annoyed?

When they decide that they are above learning something from another perspective. They go to another place to experience new things, but they complain that things are not like they are at home. I don't get that. Reply to this

Thank you, Mell and Metal.
There are very helpful!
Thanks for detailing your experiences and feelings.
They will be my important researching resources.
The Contradictory sense of expecting the extra-ordinary is a interesting subject.
The egotism somehow leads to the negative impact in tourism.
Tourists' behaviors are subconsciously controlled by a parochial sense which is based on their native habits, experiences, and lives.
And, holiday does amplify people's value, habits, and vice as well, doesn't it

I've never felt guilty but I suppose my worst habit is not using enough sun tan lotion, being from the UK it is rare I see the sun & when I get off the plane in an exotic country I pretty much spend every second I can in the sun. This has caused me to burn quite badly a couple of times the worst being Cuba, 5 hours with no sun tan lotion on on the first day & after that I had to spend a week in the shade, not fun! like mel, i have found that im smoking more. i only smoke rollies when im at home to try and get drunk quicker so i dont really smoke atall, but im travelling with a smoker, and with inexpensive cigerettes its too easy.

I also feel guilty when i lay in until 10, where theres a whole world outside my window and im enjoying a lay in. Also on days when i spend just procrastinating and not exploring, staying close to my guesthouse and eating in western food in restaurants. i also want to be more adventurous with local food..but sometimes i just fall back on the old saftey western food that i know ill like.
the amount of plastic bottle waste kills me too.

similar to above?im really really fair skinned so im very careful in covering up and dressing modestly so as not to offend anyone.

What did other tourists do that you think is really annoyed?

i dont really find much annoying..though id like people to be a bit more open and sociable. when we go out, we always make the effort to smile and say hello to other tourists and we are often just greeted with a hard stare and not so much of a smile.im out here travelling to meet new people as much as exploring new lands and sometimes you can be surrounded by other backpackers and still feel incredibly lonely.

Guilty on the cigs as well in a way, living in Costa Rica, land of the $1 pack of cigs does not help.

I actually feel guilty when traveling back home to the USA because smoking is so shunned, maybe rightfully so, but my cheap cigs back home, and smoking laws being much less harsh, has me lighting up sometimes in inappropriate places and I constantly have to check myself in some countries.

I don't think I have any bad habits traveling, at least I would like to think I don't. I keep to myself, no crazy nights, I travel for nature, to experience new culture, to relax and to learn more than anything else. I tend to be a quiet traveler, middle of the road.

I have seen some annoying tourists in my day, as a former hotel owner I dealt with some too. I hate to say it but usually at the hands of my fellow countrymen, the USA. These mostly come from people just losing their cool in some situations and overreacting.

7 Deadly Sins--

My bad habit and my guilt can be lumped into the same item. On occasion I take a photo of someone without asking. I think asking is a polite thing to do but on occasion I take the photo anyway.

I become annoyed when someone is using their cell phone in a public place- restaurant, church, concert, bus, etc.
I'm sure a forum could be written about inappropriate cell phone use and the people we have encountered.

I feel guilty every time I take a short flight, say 2 hours or less. In the past I would always go overland, 44 hours is my record bus journey.

Now I tend to make shorter trips and seeing as there are so many budget airlines around the world it's often cheaper to fly than take trains.

However, I try to limit myself to only a few per year not only because of the environmental impact but because travelling by rail, ship, pick-up, ox-cart or whatever else you can find is so much more rewarding. Reply to this

Guilty of smoking and Guilty of taking planes rather than more eco friendly modes of transport but Im often doing research or course work but I do contribute to the purchase of land for sanctuarys - i have a piece of permafrost in Patagonia and some rainforest in Far North Queensland.

I DO feel guilty for one thing I picked up from another backpacker in the 80s in Ireland that I did twice. Going to random peoples wakes which then were generally held in pubs with large crowds so you could blend in and get a free feed. Ive always felt guilty about that but I was poor and hungry back then.

Every time I travel now I contribute somehow to those less fortunate with rice or education or bubbles for orphans.

Bad habbit.. I don't think so .
So far as I am prepared before that...
To forget something that I shouldn'forget will be bad.
Other bad habbit is to be overpacked. I don't do it but lots of my friends, even female friends do.

To stay in some beautifull city and not to walk around. As to be in London and not "visit it"
