I have a small day backpack and I am debating about bringing it. I have a sling bag/purse and wondering if this will be enough. Reply to this

It depends what you are carrying. When we travel on buses, planes, boats etc. our main rucksac gets put in the luggage hold. We can't access anything that's in it and it risks people stealing from it. So we never keep things of value (either monetarily or sentimentally) in them.

A day pack can be kept with you when travelling so you can keep anything you need for the journey in them - books, games, maps, guidebooks, gifts, tools and anything vaguely valuable.

It also adds as useful extra carrying space - especially for small items that might get lost at the bottom of a rucksac. Reply to this

I'd take one.. a bag/purse is good for city sightseeing but like Kris & Kate said a daypack is essential for putting stuff in on buses & planes. You'll also need it for trekking (if you intend to do that) and short overnight journeys when you just can't be bothered to take your big bag and will leave it at the hostel.

We used to keep all our books and valuable stuff in our day pack and always kept it at our feet when on buses.

If you're really not sure get one of those foldable travel ones you can always pack it in your main pack if you want then so you get the best of both worlds 😊 Reply to this

It depends what you want to carry in it. A small bag it's always useful when you have day trips. Even an extra small backpack / bag / purse what always can squeeze in to a suitcase or whatever you are travelling with.
We always carry a small backpack with us in case if we are going to have a day trip and have to take things with us. Even if you have to carry only your passport and a bottle of water, it's useful... Reply to this

i like the option of splitting the luggage into two sections.

but i find that some of the day-bags that come as part of a bigger bag that zips on and off are sometimes too basic. better off with decent day bag.

to put it this way.
when air france lost my bag on the way to cuba i was fairly happy i had my day bag with my laptop and medical products.

losing the big bag didnt really bother me too much , i just needed to get some spare tshirts and stuff while i wated for it to arrive.

mind you, in some countries, having a day bag with you on a bus doesnt make it very safe from being tampered with, but at least if you have something with you, you can be conscious of weather or not its still there.

Hello Lorriann 😊

I think day packs are useful, because there are always books, bottles of water, pens... that people need to carry around while they are out for the day.

A day pack will however mark you out as visitor so make you more vulnerable to crime.

I usually take a cotton shopping bag, rather than a daypack, because it is enough to carry around everything I need during the day, and because it folds up nice an small when I am not using it, and I can just stuff it into may main bag.

I agree, a small daypack is really handy for your camera and water, but make sure you keep it small. I always find that the bigger the bag, the more rubbish i find to fill it and i end up trudging around with everything but the kitchen sink.
