Online check in for flights

Has anyone tried it?

Last time I was flying, another passanger told me there is online check in, for many flights, so passangers dont need to wait in check in lines at the airport. Apparently, you can check in online 23 or 24 hours before the flight time.

If you tried it, how did it go?
Does it mean you can show up at the airport just before the flight time, instead of hours before it?
Did you get an e-bording card, or did you still need to pick up your boarding card someplace at the airport? Did this mean you still had to stand in a queue? Reply to this

I have only done that with Canadian airlines, but I much prefer it. On the website, I am able to select my seat (if I did not pre-reserve), and indicate how many check-in bags I will have. It then prints up a boarding pass for me. At the airport, there is a separate line for people who have already checked in and just need to drop-off their bags. I find it to be much easier and more efficient. Reply to this

Oh, I think I have seen that thing where you can choose a seat and say how many bags you have. But, for checking in like this with the airline website(Aer Lingus) you have to pay something.

Do you have to pay a fee for online check in, with Canadian airlines, Steven?

I think I would prefer to stand in line at the airport for a little longer rather than pay a fee.

We use it all the time. Most airlines offer it, and I've used it with Malaysia, British Airlines, easyjet and Ryanair (in fact Ryanair charge you quite a lot if you don't check in online). Mostly it is similar to what Phantek has described above but some airlines like easyjet will only let you check in online if you don't want to check any luggage. You don't have to pay fees - it is cheaper and easier for the airline if you've already checked in. Reply to this

I will certainly use the online check in, in future with airlines which dont charge extra for it. 😊 Reply to this

Its definitely worth it. You get to pick your seat and don't have to get to the airport as early. I recommend it! Reply to this

Was wondering if there is any rule on how early you have to be at the airport to "drop your bags' if one has already checked in online. Would the 90 minute rule (for international flights) still apply? Reply to this

I don't know if its the same for all airlines but my last flight with Malaysia Airlines we had to drop our bags 60 minutes before the flight. Reply to this

Hi,

It s all depend, but it is very often the 45 minutes deadline that does apply. The chance is that you will not have much queue.

If you travel without luggage, the deadline is often 30 minutes at the gate. You have to show up to them to show your ID and proper visa documents if necessary.

With some airlines, you can check-in 48 hours in advance. For sure this is the best way to land a not too bad seat, as exit row are often kept for airport check-in or frequent flyer.

I use it 80% of the time, meaning at least once a week..Most will allow to print a boarding past, but if you don t have a printer with most airline you still save time as you just need to pick up your boarding pass.

Southwest Airlines gives you the option of on-line check in starting 24 hours before your flight departure. The process is easy and works well. It does not change the time you should arrive at a particular airport. It does save you standing in line at the check in counter for a boarding assignment. Southwest does not offer seat assignments, only "boarding assignments" which by number 1 to whatever. Your on-line check in will have that number and by checking in on-line early you will more than likely get a low number permitting you to board early and get the seat of your choice. Other airlines I have flown will also let you get an on-line boarding pass that reflects your actual seat assignment.Early arrival time at an airport is needed for your security clearances and as you know these times vary throughout the world.
