unfortunatly GWB and his policies have made the us the running butt of jokes over in Europe.
its not pointed at you personally
but you do have to have a thick skin.

BTW, just imagine how the Irish feel -we have been making jokes at them for ages
and the scots and the welsh...

about living and working in Europe......don't look at Europe as England because the rules/visas are all a bit different.
Its not about "just staying and working" you have to be legal and careful what you do. England can bounce you back onto the next flight out if you walk in and just state, "I think I'll look around and maybe stay." DO IT RIGHT, legally etc.
Their very serious when it comes to customs etc. (I experienced it all) Reply to this

pbowie, I can only imagine the difficulty in living in America without your UK football. It must be pure torutre. I lived in England 3 yrs and stupidly left. If I want to go back, I'll have to do all that paper work again. I seriously ask myself, is it worth it? I dread living in Calif or as I now call it, "Mexical."....the gangs, the violence, the smog, earthquakes and racism. ITS NOT CALIF ANYMORE. But I miss my cousins and cant make up my mind about "coming home two months a year to visit." Its tempting because I loved England. Some Brits claim "Oh we have violence etc " but its not like Calif's drive by shootings/murders on a daily basis ....Englands crime rate is nothing compared to Ca.
I vote you go back and enjoy your football in the UK. Your wife is silly. She can visit her family a few months a year? Reply to this

Pbowie! I can't believe your wife won't go! i want to live in England sooooo bad! Why is it the people that want it don't have it and the people that have it won't even take it! I would kill to be in your wife's shoes!

Does anyone know how to legally be able to make a move to England besides going to School or Marrying a Brit?

If not, i suppose I will have to submitt some Uni Applications and bury myself in more debt. I want to get out of Los Angeles so bad and Live in England! I think about it everyday but I feel so lost and stuck here.... Reply to this

I cannot believe you guys seem to wanna be living here in England?! Its CRAP! Overpriced, crappy weather etc. I'd give my right arm to be in sunny California right now. Meredith, I think the only thing I would miss about England is (what I think) is our brilliant sense of humour, I suppose you do need a thick skin and to not take it personally! Reply to this

Dani what has the US got that the UK dont?
apart from the weather (depending on where you live)
I am in Florida the summers are nasty-hot-humid and sticky- Air conditioning on in the house 24/7 cant sleep with the windows open until november.
hurricane threat from June till november
Orlando crime rate appaling, murders, guns everywhere. nothing but strip malls and rednecks with thier rebel flags on thier trucks with monster tyres.
we still have hatred and racism here too.

IN the UK I will have a mortgage just like here.
BUT
the football
the sense of humour
The Better TV-also better pictures -Pal is much better than NTSC
the pubs (real pubs)

the standard of living (Higher in the UK than the US - although the cost of living is lower in the US)
weekends in Paris, Amsterdam, brussels, longer trips to Berlin, Rome, Athens, Madrid etc.
I can drive 10 hours here and be in north carolina .... but a 10 hour drive from london-I'll be in beautiful France or Spain or Germany etc
plus My family ! cousins, neices etc
the UK has more for me.

Dont get me wrong, the people here are friendly but thats it, you drive home, close the door and dont venture out until the next day
the country has some beautiful palces too.
california is beautiful been there- lovely.
but
earthquakes
flash floods
race riots
mudslides
wild fires
drive bys
gangs
mexicali etc etc has ruined it. Reply to this

There is no point in this comparison . The worst place is the place you live until the day you go away from your home and you find how beautifull it was !

Pbowie that has actually made me have a think, and Fotistia you are quite right. However, how do you explain the home blues and longing to be back in Malaysia or Thailand or the US or wherever you have just had the best time of your life?

The UK is so grumpy and unfriendly and also quite racist. And the government and its policies are a JOKE I won't even get started on that!

But we are never bloody happy i suppose it aint so bad, and it's all relative...higher living costs means higher wages for e.g Reply to this

England doesn't have:

-American football
-Guns
-Freedom
-Hotdogs, pizza
-Bad beer

I think I like America a lot better

Actually, you can watch more football (soccer) in the US than you can in England. The TV rights are an absolute joke in England. Reply to this

Visited England as a teenager and really enjoyed it. But that is far different from living there! I could not at this point in my life live without the open spaces we have. When I visited NY this winter - I felt claustrophobic. Looking out and not seeing my open sky painted each night by God just for me and the mountains on the horizon, is not something I would give up.

I don't have the traffic. Because most of Montana is armed, we don't have the crime, (crooks are afraid of getting shot). Montana is so big - I can drive 10 hours and not leave Montana.

Dealing with the weather gives you a sense of community. It is actually against the law to leave someone along side the road who is broke down, in the winter. When I go to the stores, I know people who are there. I often know the clerks as well as a good part of the customers. And I love to tell stories. Grew up on the reservation and one thing the Indians know how to do is to tell a story. LOL

When it comes to bars - we have about an equal amount of bars to churches. And sometimes they get rowdy! When I was in Red Lodge watching my godchildren play in the band there, a couple of women were up on the bar dancing between sets.

I truly believe the slogan that goes with my state, The Last Best Place. Reply to this
