I require information on tour operators who provide 5 to 7 day kayaking (possibly some trekking) off a 'mother' boat in HaLong Bay. I am advised that some operators are less than reliable. Any advice or information would be most appreciated.

Not all the travel agent is not reliable. Try APT or Khanh Sinh travel for small group tours.
If you can pay more, try Hanspans, Bufalow tour, Waytovietnam travel or ODC. They can give you what best in Halong bay.
They have good reputations, and be recommended by people.
Or, can take a bus to Halong, then choose your boat/junk. There are many in wharf.
Take your choice.

Some visitors have the same feeling like you when they intend to choose a tour operator, In order to know how reliable they are, you should care about their services for the customer if they are good listeners, they care about your plan, your idea or just your money.
