Hi all, i am planning a summer road trip in the US during june and july. I plan with a mate to travel from chicago to LA by any route possible, Any suggestions? I am also looking for information on car hire. I also did a rip last year through oz where we rented a car from a great hire company traveller autobarn, who rented older cars to those backpacking, their rates for one way drive were very reasonable as were their rates on additional drivers under 25. I was wonder has anyone any advice on a similar company in the states or indeed any tips when renting of the big league car hire companies like budget or avis to name a few?
Cheers
Reply to this Well if you do go with a bigger brand rental company you can generally get better deals when doing it over the internet. I tend to prefer the bigger ones only because they are pretty reliable for breakdowns and such like that. There are always deals to be had but read the fine print. It is imperative that you make sure your contract is for unlimited mileage. I've tended to go with Budget and have always had a decent experience.
As for routes from Chicago to LA, one fun way to go is down through St. Lois and out through Oklahoma, and into New Mexico (petrified forest is cool), Arizona and all it has to offer and maybe a quick little trip over the border to Mexico. Then make your way up through San Diego to LA. The northern route is great too, and possibly less crowded in june and july.
Have fun!
