I would suggest googling all the different towns and cities you intend to visit, most towns in UK have free art galleries/museums or maybe museums where just a donation is required to gain entry.
I would imagine it is similair in Australia.

If you enjoy the great outdoors look up national parks or walking trails around the locality of where you are visiting.

In major towns or cities, there will be different festivals and events happening from time to time often these will be free events.

Another great thing to do for almost nothing, watching sports finals, I think the AFL (aussie rules) finals are in september time, go and find a pub with a load of aussie's and pick a team and soak up the atmosphere!
Hope this is semi helpfull ;)

theres heaps of free stuff to do in australia, the amount of money i spent in europe everytime i "wanted" to go in to a church or go up a tower..they wont charge you $10 a pop for that here in australia

if you enjoy sports at all, you have to go to an AFL game, the season is between march and september..a must especially in melbourne!

The National Gallery of Victoria is free for general entry and a little extra if you want to see whatever exhibition is touring at the time. You can see very cheap plays in a fantastic theatre called La Mama near Lygon Street in Melbourne.

There are festivals like Moomba which have free entertainment and activities. It all depends what you're into really. But like others have said, we have a lot of free things you can do.

Hello

In Syd and Melb there are always free events and festivals on. At the moment they run a free salsa class in Melbourne twice a week. They are all listed on the tourism/council websites.
If its hot when you are in Sydney going for a walking around Hyde Park, the gardens and the Opera house ( with a view of the Habour Bridge), at night is relaxing, romantic and the air is sweet and fresh ( unlike the air of many city's). The garden is a mix of tropical/cold climate flora and old english architecture.

You can get a half pint beer at the pubs along Bondi or in Sydney for $3 on cheap nights.

icon of Melbourne or city loop- An old school tram circles the citys icons and is free.

The Spanish festival in Melb is free and very lively. A street party on the most alterno street in Melb live music, dancing, performances, open bars and pubs, loads of people, street vendours and resturants with cheap spanish/italian, vegie, asian food. Not sure when it's on but i think somewhere in Dec or Jan

Try venturing into the country to swim at a gorge, river, creek or swimming hole and do some yabbying !!
