PADI and CMAS are agencies who certifies you as a diver. You just need to choose PADI is the largest so fare lots of accredited dive center all over the world and CMAS is the oldest organization most of their dive center is in Europe Reply to this

Hi,

Today you have PADI, CMAS, SSI.

They are all different "diving schools". CMAS is a lot more french...and you know how the french love to think they are better than everybody else...

PADI is more widely used...little problem with them....you cannot fail most of the level, let it be open water or advanced...so you find people with a "level"...and no idea of what they are doing...

SSI, is actually more a "competitor" with PADI.

The question is what you really wants to do. Diving is a dangerous sport....because at the end of the day, you play with you own life.

Where all this becomes scary is at the divemaster and instructor level...but at that level...most program do come to a certain understanding of minimum requirements, so not too many worries....

Hope this help....I'm PADI and SSI...didn't stop me to enjoy few whalesharks 3 days ago...

There are not many differences between any of them. PADI is the common certification in the US. As Peter points out PADI is really difficult to fail, but if you do all the work and are comfrotable in the water you can be a competent diver after their course. I've had my Advanced PADI certification for 10 plus years and have safely done a couple hundred dives and felt very confident in not killing myself at 100 feet.

If you go the PADI route look for a shop with a five star PADI rating to ensure that your chances of getting a quality instructor are good.
