Hello Liz
I think me an my daugher got Typhus when we were in Thailand from the flea bitten cats that are everywhere there. Not certain, because by the time I realised we had more than a regular flu, it was too late for testing so we just had to rest and hope for the best. We survived it so now have probably achieved immunity to Typhus the hard way.

One of us was bitten by a white mosquito and ended up with Dengue fever on Koh Tao, Thailand.
Does that count?

Dear Mel, Mike and Sarah,
Thank you for sharing your stories. Unfortunately, we are looking for parasitic infections more so than bacterial or fungal infections. If you know of anyone please let me know if they would be interested in sharing their stories.
All the best,

After a long backpacking trip in SE Asia and the Indian Subcontinent in 2004-2005 I managed to pick up not one but two different worms! - one flat, one round. I returned home to New York feeling great for about two weeks. This was followed by about 6 weeks of feeling like I was about to die - I could barely get out of bed most days. I submitted endless samples (that part wasn't any fun either) until the finally figured out what was wrong with me. I don't remember the long latin names for my attackers, but I'll never forget the experience. It was awful.
Still, the trip was worth all of that and much more... Reply to this

I picked up two botflies in Belize/Guatemala that I carried with me for a month or so. One I managed to get rid of just before I headed off into the jungle again, but the next went with me into the forest where it started wiggling in a fairly painful way - That botfly came back to the US with me where I finally managed to get it out. You can read a bit more about it here: Travelblog
