I'm pretty new to the backpacking world and i've just started the first of my travels. I'm currently in Seoul making my way South and ending up in Sydney in late October for the Rugby World Cup kickoff. I'm just looking for any information on what to expect in Sydney during this time of year as well as what to expect from the atmosphere that is the "Rugby World Cup". Any info. is greatly appreciated and thank you ahead of time. Reply to this

Hi Tyler,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

The next Rugby World Cup is going to be in 2011, with the semi-finals and final (23 October) to be played at Eden Park in Auckland (NZ).

Australia is one of the countries which gained automatic qualification through their pool ranking in the previous World Cup. Reply to this

Jo let me correct myself then... I'll be attending the Rugby "League" world Cup that's taking place all throughout the East of Australia. The opening ceremony is October 26th with Australia vs. New Zealand. If anyone else that comes across this and is also attending. Let me know... Reply to this

First thing you should know is what to call what.. When in Australia and you say Rugby, people will assume you mean Rugby Union (the real Rugby) or will at least ask which you mean. Saying the Rugby World Cup will always mean the Rugby Union World Cup. If you mean Rugby League then say either Rugby League, League or most commonly, Footy. Yet in some places in the south like Melbourne and Adelaide, footy could also mean AFL.

A great place to watch games are the local pubs and clubs. Most places, especially the Leagues Clubs, have large sections set aside for watching sports and its a good vibe while the games are on. Other than that, what better place to be than the stadium itself 😊

As far as general street atmosphere I suspect that there may not be such a fuss about it. During the Rugby World Cup, especially when it was in Australia in 2003, the atmosphere is great, yet people aren't as interested in the League world cup only because its so one-sided. I can guarantee either Australia or New Zealand will win. Also League is losing its popularity dispite celebrating its 100th year this year. Reply to this

Thanks Nomad and Dekka i appreciate the info. It will be my first time in the area and i specifically chose this time period so i can catch some rugby during my stay. As for the one-sided comment i would have to say you are not the first person to tell me that so i expect the same. Dekka... I'm attending the Australia vs New Zealand opening ceremony match but if you need someone to hit up the ireland matches or to just check out a pub let me know i'm game. Reply to this
