I ahve been doing research on Data and advertising and I found the following on the net, it is part of an EU DIRECTIVE ON DATA PROTECTION and it clearly says about 3 lines from the bottom that they have " Opt Out clauses to dall back on. Anyone who can give any further info on this cos it might be helpful to the many EU residents who want off the site!!!!

EU Data Protection Act
General The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force in March 2000 and replaces the Data Protection Act 1984. The scope the act applies if a company is processing sensitive personal data (i.e. data relating to a person's race, religion or sexual orientation). This applies to anything at all done to personal data ("processing"), including collection, use, disclosure, destruction and merely holding personal data. Personal data covers both facts and opinions about the individual. It also includes information regarding the intentions of the data controller towards the individual, although in some limited circumstances exemptions will apply. The new regulations come into force in the UK on December 11, 2003.

Summary
Requires businesses to gain prior consent before sending unsolicited advertising e-mail to individuals.
Requires that the use of cookies or other tracking devices is clearly indicated and that people are given the opportunity to reject them.
Network operators and their partners must be able to provide subscription and advertising services based on location and traffic data to their customers. There is no restriction on the type of services that may be provided as long as subscribers give their consent and are informed of the data processing implications.
Ensure stronger rights for individuals to decide if they wish to be listed in subscriber directories. Clear information about the directory must also be given, e.g. whether further contact details can be obtained from just a telephone number or a name and address.
Companies processing personal data must comply with the eight data protection principles.
1. Data must be fairly and lawfully processed
2. Data must be processed for limited purposes
3. Data must be adequate, relevant and not excessive
4. Data must be accurate
5. Data must not kept longer than necessary
6. Data must be processed in accordance with individuals' rights
7. Data must be kept secure
