Is Trip Advisor paying for bad reviews?

Long and controversial discussion on the effect TripAdvisor has on businesses, opinions on both sides.

Merlek, the only thing with that widget is that it credits Tripadvisor for the reviews, only driving more traffic to them.

What you should do is take the "reviews" straight from Tripadvisor without attribution. They are hardly going to sue you for copyright violation of something they claim no responsibility for 😊 Reply to this

I think that anyone who uses the term "trip advisor" is giving them credit... aren't we all saying that they should either be shut down or prove that the reviews they post are real? Until either is accomplished, we all need to only refer to them in a negative way so perhaps the "public" will start to understand what a farce they are. Reply to this

That is true - by using their name - but since there is no link - and most people do not know about TA - they would not bother to go see what it actually is. And remember - the "public" is not really our "friends..".... some people think that if they paid you for a room - they bought you aswell. We can try to make our websites as attractive as we can - but they will always believe a 3rd party before they believe us - just because we're trying to make a living. I have tried to copy and paste their "reviews" - but it won' t let you.
Whatever - we are always at the losing end... When I search our property on google - they have actually paid for our name to come up - so where do we actually stand? 50-50.... Reply to this

When the spiders and crawlers "look" at your site your content is used, so my advice is to not use their term in any way. Reply to this

Yes - you're right, schotzi - I have enough good reviews on my website that can be crawled - so why should I bother with theirs. Plus - those people who DO look up Tripadvisor are probably thinking - no way! I'm not going there!! Reply to this

I ahve been doing research on Data and advertising and I found the following on the net, it is part of an EU DIRECTIVE ON DATA PROTECTION and it clearly says about 3 lines from the bottom that they have " Opt Out clauses to dall back on. Anyone who can give any further info on this cos it might be helpful to the many EU residents who want off the site!!!!

EU Data Protection Act
General The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force in March 2000 and replaces the Data Protection Act 1984. The scope the act applies if a company is processing sensitive personal data (i.e. data relating to a person's race, religion or sexual orientation). This applies to anything at all done to personal data ("processing"), including collection, use, disclosure, destruction and merely holding personal data. Personal data covers both facts and opinions about the individual. It also includes information regarding the intentions of the data controller towards the individual, although in some limited circumstances exemptions will apply. The new regulations come into force in the UK on December 11, 2003.

• Requires that the use of cookies or other tracking devices is clearly indicated and that people are given the opportunity to reject them.
• Network operators and their partners must be able to provide subscription and advertising services based on location and traffic data to their customers. There is no restriction on the type of services that may be provided as long as subscribers give their consent and are informed of the data processing implications.

We had a wedding party stay at our inn last summer ( the wedding was not held at our place) and they tried to make one of the suites into a pre-wedding bachelor party. Guys who were not staying with us were running up and down the stairs carrying beer, etc. We were not asked and according to our state law, the people renting the room need written permission from us to allow any other people on the premises. We had to put a stop to it and where do you think these little sh..s put 2 bad reviews???? They weren't even staying with us and they were in essence trespassing...but yet TA allows them to bash us. We know it is them because of their complaining about us not letting them park all over the property. We contacted the father of the groom whose name the room was in and explained to him that since he rented the room, he has to now fix this. Oh yes, we also got an email this morning asking us about the reviews on TA stating that we are very rude and unprofessional and that this person wanted to know our recollection of the incident. Seems the father of the groom got a hold of them. How stupid are these people...Guess the guys had a couple of drinks and someone built up the courage to cowardly put in a review...they are cowards because they are afraid to use their names. The actually signed the email...Mr. & Mrs. Smith, CT Do they understand that if we really wanted to, we could trace the email?

Interesting that these are the kind of people that write reviews on Trip Advisor...see what I mean...who wants these animals staying at their place???!!! Reply to this

We may all have the same problem - disgruntled people. We also have quite a few who never stayed at our motel - we do not allow unregistered guests, so if they visit - there is a $20 visitor charge - if they park unregistered cars - there is a fee for that - and that is basically the only way to control your property - if you pay you can stay. This thing that there are unlimited guests who use our facilities and help trash the place without paying has come to an end - and like you say, schotzi - they are part of the problem who write bad reviews. Then we had one that stated they wanted to stay for one night during a special event - for which had a minimum stay requirement - and the person who answered the phone said sarcastically - "good luck..."!
One said the person who answered the phone couldn't speak english! I wonder if they even know where theyre calling! And ofcourse, Tripadvisor makes it possible for any Tom Dick and Harry to say and slander how ever they want! Although I have asked for the name and IP address of the computer thru which they received the complaint - it was ignored by Trip Advisor. Reply to this

Hello to all....We are very tired of Fake Reviews in Tripadvisor!..:We cannot control all the time cause our business is not checking what "people" write on Tripadvisor...our job is to make our guest happy.
A question to all...Do you think I can take a lawyer against Tripadvisor? I mean...In Europe you cannot publish anything that offends someone or you must pay a lot of money but Tripadvisor published a very offensive comment .

In this comment the anonymous wrote: "xxxxx treated us terribly. He lied to us, stereotyped us, screamed at us, and worst of all - threatned us. It was insane and scary.

xxxxxx cares so much about his reputation, it's a little crazy. You can even find part of his website online where he literally finds every negative review ever written about him, and rebutts the negative points. I'm sure this one will be there soon, and I'm sure he will make up some crazy reasoning like he does with everyone else. "

This is of course totally false and should be considered VERY OFFENSIVE in Europe and for this reason not legal you cannot publish that. In Europe we call it: DEFAMATION....especially if it's made by an ANONYMOUS person...Do you think I should take a Lawyer?

Tripadvisor accepts this kind of ANONYMOUS comments made by anonymous persons that cannot prove they really stayed in the places (that has a name and an adress...so no anonymous) they reviewed. This is bad I think and not really legal

Tripadvisor publishes without investigating these type of comments and anytime a hotel or a Guesthouse want to reply...we have a lot of problems cause "we don't follow their Criterias"!!!..WHICH Criterias if they accept this type of offensive comments made by some Anonymous?...We also received some Fake comments by persons that were supposed to be with us in the period of our Seasonal Clousure!!!...We wrote that to Tripadvisor and Tripadvisor didn't want to move away the comment!!!...We needed 1 month to demostrate that we were closed!!!...But I mean...they consider more comments made by ANONYMOUS than reply made by HOTELS with NAME and ADRESS!..This is terrible!

What's your advise?
Thanks a lot to all

Unfortunately, Trip Advisor does little more than allow people a "legitimate" and i use that word loosely, forum for slander. I know of many instances where people put up bad reviews in hopes of simply driving away business. While i know trip advisor checks ip addresses to ensure you are writing from where you say you are, they do little else to edit content. i myself have posted many trip advisor reviews, only to have them rejected because they say they dont like the content. And these were good reviews!!! it seems like they are very quick to post negative reviews but to get a good one posted is a lot of hard work. thankfully all my friends know that it is a bogus site and dont even bother with it anymore. Finding more and more nasty reviews...gee when they mention our competition...do ya think it could be our competition?

The funniest part is that we just an online reservation and they said they found us on Trip Advisor???!!! The last 4 reviews on TA gave us a 1 (we actually know which of our competitors did it because they decided to change their lodging from a b&b to a hotel in our area because they weren't following some local code and they blamed us for the authorities finding out)...just shows how the reviews on the site are disregarded...we have more bookings than any of our competition, even in the slow season.

I really think that these online review sites, especially Trip Advisor, are fading away into obscurity. No matter how much money they spend on per clicks and advertising using our business names...people are getting wise to the fake reviews...IT IS JUST A WHINING FORUM NOW!!!!!!! Reply to this

Check out reputationdefender.com - people are up in arms about anonymous postings and slander on the internet - and we should take charge of our own situation - because the public is gullible. Reply to this

Dont switch off US hoteliers this is for you as well.
If you live in the UK and feel you have been libeled, slandered or defamed by Trip Advisor, or your business has been severely affected by fake or malicious reviews, ( and have concrete evidence to present that supports your case). You should bring an action in the UK courts which are notoriously friendly to the claimant in such cases. All the burden of proof is placed on the defendant. You can get a court order to force Trip Advisor to reveal the original source of the offending review and bring an action against them as well. Expedia, Trip Advisors parent company, are a registered company in the UK, and their address is easily accessible. You will also have little difficulty if your case is strong enough in finding a law firm who will handle your case on a no win no fee basis.
In the US the protection provided to online publishers like TA by the first ammendement makes life more difficult. However, Google "libel tourism UK" and you will find that as a US citizen you can also bring a libel action against an American company in the UK courts and acheive an enforceable judgement. This is a situation that is changing fast in that some US states have passed legislation that blocks libel judgements in the UK courts. You will need to check what the situation is in your particular state and perhaps take some advice locally.
The sooner Trip Advisor or one of their suspect reviewers is challenged by a legal test case, the sooner we can put a stop to the whole issue of review sites and the abuse thereof.

Hi,
I am co-ordinating views on TA for a radio broadcaster whose programmes go out in the UK and world-wide on the internet. He also happens to own a small B&B in the UK which has been the subject of false reviews. TA has refused to answer emails or delete these reviews. I'd be interested in similar experiences to

Our place is no longer being used by TA as a pay-per-click by TA and we have noticed that their reviews are not even showing up on our site search until page 4 of google, which means they are not getting the traffic they used to get...because everyone is figuring it out. They have slipped dramatically in google searches....maybe the other advertisers have figured it out...who wants to be associated with a site with such a BAD reputation? Of course, except for the companies they have absorbed and their "mother" company. All this bad media attention is keeping reputable, real people from checking the site, never mind believing or relying on it.

@MDavies: when they suspect that too many positive reviews are being written about a business, they use their secret algorthm (that they have created) and remove reviews, put a "warning" on their site next to the business stating that this business has interfered with their rating system and that this should be considered when deciding on this business. We actually caught them removing a positive review that had been posted by a bed and breakfast site employee who had just stayed with us. They only way we connected the dots was that she had also posted a really good review on her website. We emailed her asking her if hers had been on TA, she said she had posted one. She contacted them (we have copies of all the emails between her and TA) They eventually reposted the review and sent her an email apologizing for the "delay" in posting her review. Since we did not know who the other 4 reviews were from, they were never reinstated. The malicious actions they took include removing 5 (positive)reviews, even though we had a rating of 4.5 they moved us in their rating system below businesses with a 3...now, really, how can they justify these actions when we actually proved to them that their algorithm does not work??!!!

The core of the issue is that they are using our registered names without our permission and in essence allowing anyone in the universe to slander us, without proving any connection to us in any way.

I could understand if we sanctioned them, but to allow a third party to profit from using our tradenames has to be stopped.

The only real criteria TA uses is that your review cannot be glowing, or that a business cannot have too many glowing reviews, too close together.

Actually, the new criteria to be highly rated on TA, is that you use their link to your site or allow them to sell rooms while they get a commission...and this is unbiased?

There are real b&b sites out there where a very negative reviewer has to prove that they actually stayed at the business...one of our competitors (who is #! in our area) still has a very poor review...because the reviewer proved they stayed there!!!

TA does not really care who they slander, as long as they make money...and as the old saying goes.."doesn't bad news sell more newspapers?" It is like a gossip forum where anyone can write anything they want...EXCEPT for the businesses...TA will not post a response that they feel isn't apologetic...how can a business apologize for something that never happened or why would a business say they will fix something when there is nothing wrong. They will not let a business post a reply if it even HINTS that the review is fake or that it didn't happen....now how is that UNBIASED???!!!

When you read the reviews, it really makes for good jokes...do real people really write these? We know they don't!!! Reply to this

I have received 403 responses via the various sites I have posted on regarding Trip Advisor and just 11 have been supportive. This clearly is an awful organisation doing harm to the industry. Reply to this
