Is Trip Advisor paying for bad reviews?

Long and controversial discussion on the effect TripAdvisor has on businesses, opinions on both sides.
14 years ago, March 24th 2010 No: 201 Msg: #107193
Its funny ive heard this from several people! I cant believe a company would do something like this. It baffles me. My name is Kade by the way. I actually looked at trip advisor when i was planning my trip to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. I ended up just planning and booking my trip through , a website i found because of my interest in staying on the legend. My trip ended up being one of the best vacations ive ever taken! I will never use trip advisor again, especially after hearing that they may be paying people to write bad reviews.

Hi I am sorry to be a pain, but I still cant get some of the pages to load....maybe its me? If you go to hoteliers support and then click on the I Hate Trip Advisor link I get:
HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found
The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
Now as I say maybe it's me? Reply to this

Hi everyone, I am so glad to find a blog who gather all hoteliers against Tripadvisor!
My hotel also have same problems with them: management response delayed, unclear information about reviewer and also the way they treat hoteliers. I never asked for being listed on that web site, and now our management team is looking for a way to remove our hotel from Tripadvisor FOREVER. Email them would not be a good idea since we will surely ignore us by all means. I hope we can make this more popular and let's our voices be heard!
Ah, I could not find and Facebook account of Tripadviorlies.... , could someone tell me how to find it and I will add it immediately! Reply to this

Quau,
the facebook page is great, but I think we are getting a lot of exposure on twitter - "tripadvisorlies" . More anti-TA hoteliers need to get on there and spread the word about what TA is doing. The public doesn't really know how they are being manipulated. Trip advisor is like a virus that is attaching itself to every aspect of travel. They use the unsubstantiated reviews to create their rating system and then use this to make lists...then they spend big bucks spreading these lists all over the media. If I was one of the bashed hotels on one of these lists, I would be going on TV and making a very loud stink.

You will notice that there are little networks of users on Twitter that RT all their TA propoganda...so we all need to do the same. If we get enough people connecting on Twitter...it will spread fast what Trip advisor is really doing.

I have been able to get on http://www.ihatetripadvisor.org.uk/ make sure you clear cookies, etc.

With acknowledgements to Phil on the excellent tripadvisor watch blog I was prompted to check out just one forum on the web and found the following content which is all self explanatory. Paradoxically all this is doing us a favour. Eventually the Tripadvisor consumers must realize how unreliable the site is. However we still need a change in the law so sign the petition

What you need to do:
Write a ~100 words review on Tripadvisor.com fill the review (takes 2 minutes)
Sign up if with your own mail id if you are not a member (takes less than 2 minutes)
Follow Up:
Click on the mail confirming you sent the review. $3 in your account as soon as the review is live!

(I know it isn't much but there's nothing you have to do, being a content writer myself, I know $3 for 100 words is good enough. You also don't need to have 100%!p(MISSING)erfect grammar, do an extensive spell check and proof read your copy.

Also, if you are already on tripadvisor, add $1 for every 10 reviews you've already written!
Send me your PMs. I'll check this thread but PMs come directly to my mailbox and this is first come first serve. I'll eventually be needing all those of you who want to do this but like 2 reviews every week.
Exceptions: People from New Delhi, India are not eligible.
Reason: Restaurant I'm promoting is located in Delhi.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for tripadvisor reviews from people who already have their accounts on tripadvisor. Easy and quick 2-7 bucks depending on your tripadvisor history.
(If you have accounts on other quality, authoritative travel sites like trivago, hostelworld etc, that'll be equally worthwhile) Hit me up on PM.

(Also, people who do not have an account, DO NOT REGISTER RIGHT NOW. I have an offer for you. You can register when it is time to submit the review. PM me for details).

I have been fairly successful in working with a few local restaurants. I charge them a set monthly price to keep up their website as well as keeping it on the first page of Google as well as helping them with their email marketing and controlling online reviews on places like Yelp, Tripadvisor and some more localized sites. It pays well, but you have to get out and talk to people face to face.

Hotel reviews
I am looking to hire people to write five hotel reviews on a popular accommodation review website.

The reviews will be for five different properties, be 4/5 stars and about one (maximum two) paragraphs in length. One property is the one I am tasked with promoting the other four will be selected at random (different decoys for each reviewer).

We can supply the content for each review. Pay is higher for reviews posted by an established user account (over one year old) please PM me with your interest.

TENTHIRTEEN sEPT 6 2009 Hand of A'Dal

amber0307 and Talks_44 I have PM'd you. Just to clarify a few things for people interested in this work...

1. This is very easy money, there are no catches, all we ask is that you follow our instructions.

2. We have been tasked with promoting a hotel online and part of this involves increasing online reviews. This is where you come in.

3. We are looking for three new positive reviews per week so if six people ask for the job this week then three of those would be asked to wait until next week. We'll note your interest in working with us down and contact you in due course. This is a long-term promotion project that we have so you definitely will be contacted in future weeks.

4. If you are already a member of the travel review website and have written reviews in the past then we would pay $20 for a handful of new reviews of the properties we choose. The reviews need to be 1-2 paragraphs in length each and we would need to read/proof them before you submit them to the review website. We pay via PayPal as soon as they are 'live' on the review website.

5. If you don't have an account please do not set one up right away. We still want to work with you but it is better that the reviewers account is set up on the day the reviews will be posted. We do not want a dozen reviews from people who all registered on the same day. The pay for a newly registered Tripadvisor account is $10, as above, this is for a handful of new reviews of the properties we choose. The reviews need to be 1-2 paragraphs in length each and we would need to read/proof them before you submit them to the review website. We pay via PayPal as soon as they are 'live' on the review website.

6. This is a long-term promotions project so we are always in need of fresh reviews, don't be disheartened if we ask to work with you in two weeks time instead of immediately - we still definitely want to work with you.

This could be for the following reason. They must remain passive where moderation is concerned.

Faltering Legal Immunity

TripAdvisor and other review web sites have thus far benefitted from immunity from defamation and related law suits in the United States due to the 1996 Communications Decency Act.
The Communications Decency Act was passed by Congress to protect Web site operators from lawsuits stemming from content created by their users. The Act states that "No provider … of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider."
The act defines an interactive computer service as "any information service, system, or access software provider that provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a computer server."
However, a 2007 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit found that a web site operator can be both a service provider and a content provider, and be immune from liability for some of the content it displays to the public, but subject to liability for other content.
Writing for the majority, Chief Judge Alex Kozinski said that if a Web site operator "passively displays content that is created entirely by third parties, then it is only a service provider with respect to that content," and protected by the Communications Decency Act. But when a Web site operator is responsible in whole or in part for creating or developing, the Web site is also a content provider.
TripAdvisor furnishes and manipulates its web site content in a number of different ways--perhaps the most obvious being the "warning" they wrote discussed above; and such provision of information content will make their immunity under the Decency Act disappear. http://living-abroad-consultants.com/id16.html Reply to this

I have been having ongoing battles with Tripadvisor for a couple of years, they refuse to remove a bad review from a woman that has never stayed at my hotel, the woman could not even get right the fact that we have 11 bedrooms stating that we had 5, she did not describe the hotel correctly at all and even named staff that do not or have not worked here, my plea's have fallen on deaf ears and they have been rude and offensive.
Now they do not put new reviews on at all as guests have told me that they are ignoring there reviews, we went fro having 10 or so a year to not having anything for 9 months.

A friend of mine has had a similar problem and has started a Facebook page.......... Tripadvisor guests from hell. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=185645426436&ref=ts

Join the page a share your experiences not just with the guest from hell but also your bad experiences with the Tripadvisor mob.

Yes - that is a good name for some guests - the guests from hell! But then, we are the ones living with "the guests from hell" cleaning their trashed rooms and bad attitudes when they leave - and all the booking engines, like Expedia - just get clean commission - no work involved! Reply to this

14 years ago, March 29th 2010 No: 213 Msg: #107527
If the guest 'trashes' the room, then charge them for it.
A hotel owner might not want to pay any money to an agent, but if someone gave you £1000 in return for paying them $100, then you'd pay it, because it's a good deal.
"No work involved" - I suppose Expedia, like all the other booking agents, just created themselves out of thin air.

However, any hotel owner complaining about Tripadvisor should not be using Expedia since that's its parent company.

Anyone here using Expedia, Laterooms, etc, is paying money to Tripadvisor, the very entity which is screwing them. Reply to this

Expedia like Tripadvisor do not class our establishment as a hotel, we only man our front desk for 22 hours a day so they class us a a B&B, they have also refused to acknowledge our postal address and have put us in a village 12km from the town, now no one can find us on ta, not a bad thing I suppose!! Apparently Tripadvisor were a party to the hoax. At least that is what they are claiming now. It might have been a good joke if it were not so close to the truth.
Apparently you can now earn imint reward points from Tripadvisor if you post some fake reviews on my my newly registered Fawlty Towers Hotel.
Only joking I'd rather you signed my petition so we can see and end to this nonsense.

Everyone needs to sign the petition.

Trip Advisor was a party to the hoax...but they are publishing a fake listing and then allowing over 600 fake reviews...how can they possibly be credible any longer? Well, in my opinion they have never been credible, but now between this hoax that got past their FILTERS & ALGORITMS and the payment for listings they want us to pay...should prove to the public that they are not TRUSTWORTHY!

Spread the word folks!

We have recently had a bad review from a couple who had booked a "Budget" room, they left us a bad review because they did not have clean towels every day, we completed the owners response explaining that in budget rooms there is a welcome pack that explains that if they wish to have clean towels to tell us at breakfast time, they seemed such a lovely couple, chatting about our family and life and then leave us bad feedback because they could not be bothered to read the welcome pack.
As usual Facebook has refused to publish our owners response because it goes against their rules?!?! Reply to this

tripadvisorlies - Yes - I charged them. And what did I get? A review on TripAdvisor with a heading that says: that said: "All we got was a bowl of crap"!!!! Their so-called guidelines for hotel rebuttal is - no profanity - how does the guest from hell get away with it!! I have cancelled my GDS with Pegasus and asked that they remove me from all bookable sites - I have threatened Expedia - but they will not remove me. When people go to our listing on Expedia, it says: check here for availability - and then it comes back to say: no rooms available. How nice. A couple days ago I rebutted the review with TripAdvisor, but I'm sure nothing will happen - because as someone said - those 20 year olds that work there - they have no authority, anyway. they just seem to be the firewall. I would recommend that every hotel owner withdraws from such services which pay a commission to Tripadvisor for click-thoughs.
But will they? Will they buggery!

Hotels don't need the big agents such as Expedia or Laterooms, etc, to source guests. There are smaller, far more professional, non-corporate booking agents out there who do a way better job of providing quality guests.
I should know, as I run one myself, and since the service is more personal, the guests supplied are less likely to be of low quality (the kind who screw over the establishment with a false review). Reply to this
