Ruta 40
Dirt road, dirt road and more dirt road! Hay una version en español abajo!
==============================
Argentina (06/04 - 13/04/09)
We left Ushuaia on the morning of 06/04 for the long drive across Patagonia, which meant firstly crossing back into Chile in order to take the ferry. The next 3 days were spent travelling on the Ruta 40 which crosses the southern part of Patagonia and is slowly being paved but for us it meant lots and lots of dirt road! Needless to say 3 days of travelling was a little boring but it was broken up by a morning trip to Cueva de Las Manos, a picturesque valley with rock art painted onto the valley wall. In the main the art was negatives of hand prints, painted by the diffusion of paint around the hand, but also some hunting scenes of guanaco (a type of llama). The paintings have been dated as being as old as 9,000 years and has been named a site of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The endless miles of driving ended when we reached Bariloche in the Lake District Region of Argentina and on the shore of Lago Nahuel Haupi which gives its name to the surrounding National Park.
Lunchtime spot
Something to look at after lunch! The next day I took a kayaking trip on Lago Mascardi, about an hour's drive from Bariloche. We paddled (in two man kayaks) for about an hour across the lake which was very enjoyable, I set a good rhythm (if I do say myself!) and we powered across the lake. After landing on a picturesque beach we went for a walk for about an hour and a half before returning to the beach for lunch. Despite having a tail wind on the way home it was a much tougher paddle but overall I had a really enjoyable day and I could have spent all day paddling around the lake admiring the scenary and listening to the water rippling against the shore.
Later that night we went to a restaurant for a group member's birthday.
Chile (14/04 - 16/04/09)
We left Bariloche on 14/04/09 and the journey across to Pucon in the Chilean Lake District was a relatively easy 6 hours (some on dirt roads) and despite having to unload all of our bags for the customary search for fruit it was made much easier by the use of an x-ray machine.

Lunchtime spot
Something to look at after lunch! draws of Pucon is to trek to the top of Volcan Villaricca but after enquiring whether one could see lava or explosions/eruptions at the top and getting a negative response I decided that it wasn't worth the effort of walking upwards for 5 hours (and using crampons in places) and down for 3. Instead I went for a very enjoyable horseride , quickly getting used to the one handed riding style and being able to trot, canter and descend the steep mountain slope without holding on. The ride was on a Mapuche 'reservation', the indigenous people of the area and afterwards I ate some traditional Mapuche food - different types of bread, honey and some pastries, one of which had meat in it and afterwards the guide joked that it was horse meat but I wasn't sure if he was joking or not!
The next day I took a public bus to Parque Nacional Huequehue, about an hour away from Pucon and had a pleasant walk along a well marked trail, opting to have a leisurely stroll rather than try to do the whole circuit. I found a lovely spot for lunch overlooking a lake with sun light dancing
Cuevas de las Manos
Between 1,000 and 9,000 years old on it and didn't see a soul for the whole hour I sat there.
The final day in Pucon was the day before my birthday and because the itinerary showed us as bush camping the next night I decided to have my birthday meal in Pucon. After much searching I found a great looking restaurant of Asian and Middle Eastern fusion but unforunately it was closed for a private booking and instead opted for a Peruvian restaurant. I had a nice meal but after a couple of very strong rum and cokes and a Pisco Sour I was a little the worse for wear and had a relatively early night after that!

Argentina (06/04 - 13/04/09)
Between 1,000 and 9,000 years old la pared hay muchos pinturos de manos.
