A long drive took us towards the Strait of Magellan where we caught catch a ferry over to Tierra del Fuego and bush camp on the Chilean side before planning to cross over into Argentina and travelling down to Ushuaia the next day. The weather was pretty miserable all day after the evening ferry crossing (about 45 mins) things weren't looking good for a suitable place to camp - nearly all of the land was fenced in and in any case looked pretty boggy. We continued to drive after it got dark, not ideal for looking for a camping spot, and eventually we reached the Chilean border post and our tour leader asked there if there was somewhere suitable to stay. We were in luck, however, there was a building that put a whole new meaning on bush camping. It was a disused and abandoned police station with little glass in any of the windows and with all of the fixtures and fittings removed. To be fair it was a welcome relief to be able to be inside and not have to put the tents up in the rain, and after I had boarded up the window with cardboard, the spot I found was pretty good and later I had a good night's sleep. Being in a ramshakle building wasn't without its risks however, and whilst a few of us were sitting on the truck drinking, others were larking around in the building and unfortunately one of the girls was knocked out cold by a falling door.

The remoteness of where we were meant that there were no medical facilities so the next day we made a longer than scheduled stop in Rio Grande to visit the hospital the next day and luckily there was no serious injury, just concusion.

We reached Usuaia, where we would stay for 3 nights, later that evening and checked into a nice hotel, and the room I was in with 3 others had a jacuzzi, which I made immediate use of, and it was very welcome to have some creature comforts after the previous night. The highlight of the stay in Ushuaia was a 3 hour boat trip on the Beagle Channel where many sealions were basking in the sun, and off one of the small islets we were chased by a pod (if anybody know the collective noun for sea lions please let me know!) of them dancing and playing in the water, not unlike a pod of dolphins, very unexpected and very spectacular. Hopefully the video has successfully uploaded so you can see the sea lions too. Or try Sea Lions

My room for the night...My room for the night...My room for the night...

...a nice spot (after I had swept the floor and blocked up the 'window'!)
