Hay español abajo! I promised myself that I wouldn’t need to say this again, but here it is, time for another long over due update!!! It’s a whole 4 months since my last update so what an earth have I been doing?! After my trip to the Galapagos I flew to Guayaquil, rather than return directly to Quito. Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador and itss commercial heart. It doesn't really have any prime tourist attractions but I was immediately drawn the hustle and bustle and rough and ready nature of the city. Stories abound of robberies and many of the Ecuadorian friends I made there have been robbed multiple times in their lives but I had no problems and never felt unsafe. In recent years the city has started to regenerate itself and itss ... read more

Hay español abajo. I arrived in Quito, Ecuador on 24th of July after a long 26 hour bus journey from Bogota in Colombia. I was going to be studying in a language school the following week and had arranged a home stay where I went straightaway. I will write more about my time in Quito later on but after studying for a week I decided that I wanted to go to the Galapagos Islands. I hadn´t been planning on going but some friends had told me that there were some good deals around and Saturday 01/08 I booked a First Class boat with a hefty £400/$600 discount for an 8 day trip leaving the following Wednesday. I left Quito at 7.30 on the Wednesday morning for the 3 hour flight to the Galapagos Islands, which included ... read more

Hay espanol abajo! I left Panama on Monday 6th of July on a short 1 ¼ hour flight over to Cartagena, Colombia which is on the Caribbean coast. I arrived in Cartagena at about 11pm and despite not having booked any accommodation I found a small hotel with a dorm room with 5 beds and immediately got chatting to the guy on the bunk above me. He was Colombian and we spoke in Spanish for a while and I found out that he lived on a nearby island, painting (he was an artist), catching fish and living a life without modern comforts, including electricity. He had space for backpackers and invited me over to stay and said that I could make arrangements through the hotel. Cartagena (Cartagena de Indias, to give it its full name) was ... read more

Upon arriving in Costa Rica on Tuesday 1st of July we decided that we would pass through straight to Panama City. The others had different dates for being back in the States and therefore different timeframes for being in places so I went along with the majority and the plan was to find a boat to take us from Panama to Colombia. From the Costa Rican border post we took a direct bus for about 4-5 hours to the capital , San Jose, arriving in the evening and were able to purchase tickets for the 15 hour bus journey to Panama City where we arrived, somewhat tired after 2 days of travelling on Wednesday 2nd of July. Panama City is said to be the most modern city in Central America but I was immediately surprised by ... read more

Hay español abajo! I flew from Peru to Nicaragua, via Miami on 05/06/09. Not the most direct route you might be thinking but it was the cheapest way of getting there. My reason for leaving South America was to catch up with somebody (Alyssa) I had met in Guatemala who was studying and travelling for 6 weeks, whilst in between jobs in the States. I studied at a Spanish language school, La Mariposa, from 07/06 to 27/06. The school was set up on a not for profit basis two years ago by a British women, Paulette, who donates the profits from the school to various local organisations. The school is also an eco-hotel with 8 bedrooms and I stayed there for the 3 weeks, enjoying the creature comforts of a large room and hot (solar powered) ... read more

Hay español abajo! I left La Paz on Saturday 29/05 to begin the journey to Lima, where the following Friday I would be taking a flight to Miami and then onto Nicaragua. My first stop was Copacabana, on the shore of Lake Titicaca. I had decided to splash out a little on a nice hotel and for the princely sum of £22/$35 (cheap, but expensive for a backpacker!) got to stay in the nicest hotel I have ever been to. The place didn’t actually feel like a hotel with just four ‘suites’ perched on a hill overlooking the Lake. Upon arriving I decided to take the duplex, a small, glass fronted from top to bottom, semi-detached suite with a kitchenette, seating area and bathroom downstairs and a platform with a bed and a hammock upstairs. The ... read more

As always I am behind on my updates so I am going to try a different approach - write about what I am up to at the moment and fill in the gaps later! At the moment I am in La Paz, Bolivia which is the highest capital city in the world at 3,400 metres, although constitutionally it isn't actually the capital and it should be in Sucre in the south of the country, where the Judicary still sits. I arrived at about 5 o'clock in the morning of 6th of May and after grabbing a couple of hours sleep in the apartment of a couple I met on a tour the previous weekend (James is English and his wife, Maughe, is Bolvian) I went to the language school I had been in touch with previously ... read more

17/05/09 - 23/05/09 After the week and a half of classes I felt ready to have a break and found a great 5 day biking and boating trip Bike&Boat - from Sorata (about 3 hours north of La Paz) to Rurrenabaque in the Amazon Basin. I travelled to Sorata by minibus, about 4 hours north of La Paz on Sunday, 17th of May and stayed there overnight and met the rest of the group at 7am the next morning. We travelled uphill in the two jeeps for about 3 hours, up to an altitude of 4,800m (from 2,700m) where we kitted ourselves out with helmets and protective knee/shin pads and rode our bikes a little to get used to them, before commencing the 4,000m decent which would take 2 days and cover about 110 kilometres on ... read more

Hay español abajo! _______________ Here’s an update on some of the missing time from my blogs. This covers the time period from 22/04/09 to 28/04/09. In case you are confused here is a very brief over view of my travels since I left Guatemala: 03/03/09 - Left Guatemala. 04/03/09 - 08/03/09 - Uruguay: Punte del Este; Montevideo; Colonia. 08/03/09 - 16/03/09 - Argentina: Buenos Aires. 16/03/09 - 18/04/09 - Overland tour of Argentina & Chile 19/04/09 - 22/04/09 - Chile: Santiago & Valparaiso On Wednesday 22/04/09 I left Santiago on an overnight bus for a journey which I thought was going to take 20 hours but was in fact scheduled for 24 hours. After that length of time an extra 4 hours is pretty unimportant and the journey itself passed relatively quickly. My destination was San ... read more

18/04/09 - 22/04/09 After arriving in Santiago on 17/04 and having a last (tour) group meal together I once again had the freedom to do what I wanted and when I wanted, which was something I had been looking forward to for a week or two. I enjoyed the 5 weeks from Buenos Aires to Santiago and saw some amazing scenary along the way but now I was ready to set forth on my own. On Sunday 19/04 I took a bus to the coastal town of Valparaiso, about 2 hours north west of Santiago. Valparaiso is a port town and was the leading merchant port along the Cape Horn and Pacific Ocean routes and was once Chile's financial powerhouse. Its demise began after an eathquake in 1906 and the opening of the Panama Canal in ... read more
