Pachacamac - meaning ¨he who created land and time¨: A major city that saw four distinct cultures 1)Lima Culture - the oldest, 2,000 yrs ago 2) Wari 3)Ychsma and lastly the 4) Inca 600 yrs ago. This was the biggest city to survive due to it´s conivenient location. Eventhough desert surronds it, a nearby river and ocean produced plenty of food and water for it´s inhabitants. The city at some point housed a ¨Nunery¨ of about 200 women that were picked for their pureness (virginity) and beauty so as to at some point serve as Wives for the elite or to be used as human scarifices. Fortresses wee built around the complex and guards stood around to protect these women. But, these guards were castrated and had their faces burned so that there wouldn´be any chance ... read more

EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS MORE PHOTOS HERE Peru is the reason I added South America, and five months, to my original itinerary idea. I had always wanted to go, but ever since my friend Yamil had gone and come back with stories and pictures of the Macchu Picchu back in 2003, it was a very definite dream, and a compulsory stop on this adventure. The stench outside the Lima airport is hardly bearable, a mix of rotten fish, black waters, and chemical discharge, but my CS host is real sweet, picking me up from the airport at 5.00am. I get a little sleep before hitting the center, an hour from there in a "combi," the local mini-bus, with a guy at the door shouting routes and whisking you in and out the speeding machine, which hardly ... read more

Met two a cool couple over breakfast, Cari and her boyfriend, whose name i can´t remember. They had been traveling now for 4 months and were going to be staying in peru for a bout a month then heading down south. Before I knew it, Cari, her bf, Roger from England, Inez and I were catching a bus to go take a look at the famed Museo Nacional. We payed 15 soles for a guided tour and it was the best money well spent by the group. The guide was so informative , funny and answered every question we had. The museum also had a section of all the terroism that went on due to the Sendero Luminoso where thousands of innocent people died bc of the group. After two hours meandering through the museum ... read more

It seems as though every morning most of my dorm wakes up at the same time, 9:00 am. Had breakfast with my new Argentianian friend, Inez. Today we were set on going to the Center of Lima....ohhh, something they say is unsafe and dangerous. With confidence, we got on the omnibus that´s packed with people. At 1 sole y 20, it´s a bargain! It stopped every two min to jam pack the tiney bus. A girl from Englad, who was on the same bus and did not speak a word of spanish, looked terified. So Inez and I told her that she should come with us. So off we were..inez, jenny and I. First, to watch the changing of the guards but all we saw behind the gated Palacio de gobierno, was a band playing ... read more

This morning we went to see some of the ruins outside of Lima. They were very expansive and represented four different cultures that had inhabited and built on their own temples, with the Incas being the last. The different styles of building and brick were neat to see, as well as the excavation process. One of them, the Women temple, was renovated to what it would have been like. Very nice tour, especially because our van had air conditioning from site to site haha. We then visited the local mall for a prearranged lunch and ocean view, and saw people paragliding above us. We´re wrapping up our last tour online now to the Palamino Islands for tomorrow. They´re similar to the Ballestas and we couldn´t decide, so we just did both! Supposedly we can swim with ... read more

Here we are! Here is the skyline of the city at night- http://www.theperuguide.com/grafica/mira-park2.gif Yesterday in Puerto Maldonado was marginally better. We attempted to go to a guidebook recommended Butterfly House only to be told that it wasn´t open, and that if we were tourists it was $25 US dollars. A piece!! Yikes. So we walked down to Serpentario, which was a neat display of local snakes and amphibians. They also had a blind ocelot which is like a little jaguar. Ocelot- http://www.redwoodwd.net/one/yvonne/images/ocelot.jpg It was neat to see a lot of different snakes and frogs as well, we even got to hold an Anaconda or two )baby ones!) Which apparently get quite large Anaconda- http://www.infotechart.com/jalbum/records/slides/anaconda.jpg We spent the rest of the time trying to find a restaurant to eat in, having people glare at us, and ... read more

I take it really easy today as I'm off for Nazca tomorrow by bus. I paid for a first class ticket. Maybe next time I will get a second class ticket to see if there is a difference between the classes. It's very hot and I only spend one hour down on the beach before I head back to the hostel. Yes, I actually made it down to the beach. I was going to go surfing here in Miraflores but the water looks very dirty and the Lonely Planet guide book says that it's polluted. Also, talking to all the Aussies (including the surfers), they all said the same thing. If the Aussie won't surf then I think I shouldn't either. I go to the supermarket for lunch and dinner. I haven't tried to speak English ... read more

All the Aussies are gone, but guess what? You guessed it. More Aussies have shown up. I'm starting to lose track of who they all are. Almost all of them are heading to Cuzco to do the Inca trail. It must be a pilgrimage for Aussies. Guess the Holy Land just doesn't cut it for them. Most of them stay only one or two nights in the hostel. Today, I'm heading to downtown Lima with Evan (Alaskan). It's a very long bus ride. The bus is cramped and our knees are hitting the seats in front of us. It gets worse when a huge Peruvian guy plops himself down in the seat in front of us. Ouch! I don't think I will be able to walk now. It takes us more than half an hour to ... read more
