MORE KAYAKING no pictures for this one cos your intrepid reporter learned well from his last camera/water encounter and left it at the hostel. After our fantastic expedition in Tenna, Jen and I decided to take up the offer of two days of class 2 and three, with a Peruvian agency. We thought they had a lot to live up to after River Rafting People, and we were right. In terms of organisation and general administrative competence, they were arse. THe guide was good though, as were the rapids themselves-the river was more densely rapided (terrible english but i dont care), and the equipment was good too; good kayaks and Carbon Fibre paddles. Overall, it was made more apparant than ever that rocks arent friendly and the roll is difficult when you need it. On day ... read more

It seems to be that Peru is very much the land of mummies. Either that or I have just developed some rather perplexing necro-type obsession. hmmm. Well, here we are in Arequipa, Southern Peru. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage town in 2000and then swiftly got nailed by an earthquake in 2001, so luckily got the money to rebuild it. Its a big colonial town nestling at the foot of some volcanoes. There is Misti, coming in at 5822m and Chachani at 6,057m. These peaks are particularly terrifying, not only because they send tremors to the town every day, but also because me and Rich hope to climb them both in October! Bad Ass! Well, after an eruption in 1995, an anthropologist climbed to the top of Chachani. Up there he found the 500 year ... read more

i apologise for the name, im scraping the barrel here Rich again, and this time weve been on a fantastic three day trek through Colca Canyon. At 1300 metres, this is the second deepest canyon in the world and twice as deep as the grand canyon. Suddenly that doesnt seem so grand! We started the trek with a descent into the canyon floor, where we spent out first night in a local hovel. The second day was a trek through the canyon floor to an oasis, which has been developed and features pools fed constantly by fresh spring water. Very cool. On the way through we visited an ancient, and almost totally unvisited judging by the overgrown nature of the trail (I chose this as a good moment to try and fling myself over a precipice, ... read more

hola mis amigos, Well i am in ecuador now and trying to get caught up on my "blogs". we did a two night trek in colca canyon, the worlds deepest canyon. well actually the second deepest. there is a canyon next to it that is a little deeper. i believe the canyon is about 10000 feet deep, but again i can be wrong. anyway, we only hiked down about 3000 feet or so (but that was plenty for my knees) . spent the night down in the canyon and then hiked out the next day stopping at a oaisis to relax by the pool. on the way out some of us were a little tired and hungry and found out that the guide didnt have any food - he forgot to mention that we should buy ... read more

Picked up the morning paper and verified that the strike is escalating and will essentially shut down the city come Monday Though I love the city of Arequipa and want to spend more time here, I fell its time we move on as quickly as possible. Road/bus transport is pointless, and train is still susceptible to boulders... so I book two airline tickets to Juliaca (near Puno)...earliest they have is Monday morning. Alessandra felt better by Midday so we decide to go see the bull fights. We got a cab to the stadium in a suburb of Arequipa (travel within the city is still possible on weekends) Quite an interesting sport, they replaced a matador with another bull. To get the bulls to fight each other they parade, what I guess is, a pretty looking cow ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon July 2nd 2005

We woke up at 6 am to begin he 2 hour drive west towards the view point of the condor. Colca canyon is by definition the the words second deepest canyon at 3400 meters or so (the first is the Colthuasi Canyon(sp?) 75 km to north which beats it by 40 meters or so). Colca canyon was formed by a combination of river erosion and the massive fault line created by two volcanoes on either side of the canyon. Though Colca Canyon is impressive in its own, I felt the grand canyon is more photogenic. We arrived at the flight of the condor viewing point, we were not disappointed, at approximately 8:30 we saw the first of the condors ride the thermals created by the sun striking the western canyon cliffs. These birds are huge, some ... read more

We booked a tour to the Colca Canyon, primarily to view the flights of the Colca condors. The trip started with difficulty. The tour told us to be ready for pickup at 5 in the morning... apparently to avoid the road blockades set up by the taxi and bus strikers on every road leading out of Arequipa.... it didn't help, we were blockaded about 10 km out of the city at about 6 AM. The driver turned around and apparently knew of an alternate route through a volcanic pass up Mt. Misti. Yes you guessed it some 300 or so hair raising switchbacks to get through the pass. We eventually make it to the highlands north of Arequipa, here we reach 4900 meters in altitude (16076 ft). Hadn't it been for the fact we were somewhat ... read more

At 10 PM yesterday we boarded a Cruz del Sol bud destined for the 12 hour trip to Arequipa. We opted for the Cruzero class... which basically means you get a foot rest and the seat reclines to about 15 degrees...curiously the bus had its own stewardess and we got dinner and breakfast on board. Though it was dark.. I could tell the trip was one hell of a drive through various valleys and multiple switch backs, thankfully the road was paved the full way. We arrived a half hour early. Alessandra did not travel well and seems to have caught a bug of some sort... probably from the questionable street food we ate the day before. We grabbed a cab to our Hotel Lluvia del Oro. Older than God, but nice accommodations... no complaints ... read more

Arrived in Arequipa and saw some road blocks begin. Some of the locals have put burning tires and rocks in the middle of the road, protesting the rising gas prices. I got a few photos that should have made the front page news! We managed to get taxi driver who was willing to take us into the city and avoid the blockades, without getting stoned to death! Tonight, I will try to leave on a bus.....BUT, the whole city is blockaded...could be interesting.... read more
