After a few days in the desert near Ica we headed east to Arequipa (alt. approx 2500m), the 2nd city in Peru. The city sits in the shadow of three volcanoes, the most prominent being El Misti. With a fantastic looking Plaza De Armas surrounded by cobbled streets and alleyways, it is a far nicer city than Lima, and has a much more cosmopolitan feel to it than anywhere in Peru we had been to date. We spent a bit of time sat drinking coffee (and beer!) on the restaurant balconies overlooking the Plaza - very nice, although we kept getting bothered by locals playing Simon and Garfunkel on the Pan Pipes. From Arequipa we made our way north over the Alitplato (high altidude pampa) to a town called Chivay (alt. approx 3700m), at the head ... read more

Hola amigos, como estas? (Spanish going quite well, on hour 4 of Spanish tapes which, worryingly, is an hour ahead of our tour guide who is supposed to look after us on the second half of the tour! Good incentive to keep at it or we will be going hungry and staying in dirt holes!) In both Equador and Peru they are mostly really friendly and always waving to us as we drive past in our big truck and some even offer to help us when we are lost in the cities. Also a lot of the hostel and hotels have live premiership and champions league so managing to keep up with most of the footie which is a bonus. Here´s the travel blurb: Went to visit two of the most important archeological sites in the ... read more

... read more

We were picked up by our guide from our hostel at 6am on Sunday morning and then caught the public bus to Cabanaconde which was the start point for our ´trek´. The six hour bus journey passed through the suburbs of Arequipa and then through into open plains with grazing Aplacas and Llamas and surrounded by snow capped peaks. After been introduced to our group consisting of 2 Beligum girls a French couple and a Canadian we were taken to small restaurant at our starting point, we had lunch of Alpaca steak and fresh trout and then started off on the walk down the canyon to our first destination of Tepay. The walk was a taken at quite a steady pace and took about 3 1/2 hours, our guide pepe was quite knowledgeable about the plants ... read more

Colca Canyon exceeded expectations. We were lucky enough to see 15 very large condors including several young ones which were perched on the rocks near the viewpoint. We were glad it was worth the trip as the bus ride was torturous, bumpy and dusty and with the same music tape looping for hours! Next day we explored Cusco, where we had arrived late the previous night, and generally chilled out in preparation for the Inca trail which was looming. In the evening we managed a few (very strong) drinks at Paddy´s Irish bar, before clubbing the night away. We suffered a bit in the morning! The day had arrived when the tour guide came to take us on the Inca Trail, no backing out now!!! Before we started the challenge we had a leisurely day of ... read more

We arrived at Lima airport at 11pm and after a wait and a wander through a crowd of people and taxi drivers holding boards with peoples names on we found our pre-arranged lift to our Hotel in Miraflores on the outskirt of Lima. In the dark the sights of Lima didn´t look too inviting and the smell of air pollution was heavy. The next day we decided to head straight out of Lima and start our journey south. So we headed down to Pisco a town a 4 to 5 hour bus journey south of Lima. The sights on the Journey were interesting, many houses look half built and we are not sure whether that is half built or half demolished. The streets leaving Lima seemed to be filled with hundreds of car repair places and ... read more
