Ladies and Gentlemen, In this chapter of my blog, the last one from Ecuador, you will hear about hair-raising adventures, including how I got hit during rafting (and by who...), how 50 Israelis can get into a quite small dining room, how we got lost in a national park at 4000m height with rain and fog, and much more! So how was Rosh Hashana? I hope you all enjoyed a good meal and some rest. I haven't written for a week now, so let's start from the beginning - Baños, the city in which all our plans kept going wrong. We got to Baños on Sunday noon, found a very nice and cheap hotel, walked a little bit around and immediately started thinking that we want to stay there more than the 2 days that we ... read more

Hi All, Sorry I haven't written in a few days, but I'm writing now, so don't complain. We got to Cuenca Friday night, and went to a hostel that was recommended to us by the German couple we met in the Galapagos. However, it turns out that there are two hostels with the same name, and they are very close to each other, so naturally, we ended up in the wrong one. We did meet a nice German girl there, who also got to the wrong hostel because of the same reasons, so that turned out okay. On Saturday, we went to Ingapirca, which is the biggest Inca site in Ecuador. Well, Ecuador's biggest Inca site has a half ruined temple to the Sun, another small building with no roof, and lots of stones on the ... read more

Arrived in Loja at 9.30am and got taxi to our prison style hostel! The town has an architectural musical bridge, as apparently the town is often lined with musicians, but no sign as of yet. There is also a very pretty gateway into the town, consisting of a characteristic white-washed church, which we think is now an artisan. We missed this on our first visit, as every single taxi driver has taken us a different route each time. We caught up on some sleep for a while, exhausted after our long journey. We will not miss those bus rides, but they will stick in our memories for some time! Prepared this time, we chose our restaurants carefully, & fortunately this time it was not Sunday. However the shops and restaurants do still seem to have random ... read more

Things aren´t great at the moment. I´ve been puking up and more for the last two days. To cap things off my first night here I accidently checked into a love hotel, so had to put up with amorous noises all night to boot. I´ve moved now (a traumatic experience in itself when you have precisely 10 minutes between forced toilet visits). Still this afternoon things have come together a bit, I even managed a walk and sat out watching a practice session for some blues concert (how appropriate) going on in La Mariscal the heart of the new town here, so maybe tomorrow I´ll be back to normal. I´m on an all liquid diet now, having made the mistake of a burger last night. Still thats not the worst thing in the world either - ... read more

Hello everyone, Today I hope to attach some pictures of San Gerardo school, where Ellie and I are working. The school, which has a sister contact in Germany, was designed by a German architect and constructed by German engineers. It is bright, well-lit, and craftily put together. Recently, the principal, Violeta, adopted three puppies for the school. They now live in a bathroom-sized dog house in the recreation area of the school, inside a gated area. Names: Romeo, Julieta, and Tigre (quite an ugly little devil), respectively. Violeta has also adopted a puppy for her very own, Lupita, a long-legged, scruffy, incredibly vocal beast that cries in the morning (on Saturdays, at 7 am) when left alone. Violeta lives in the apartment directly above us, with her new pet. Really, the dog is actually quite sweet. ... read more

Hello everyone, I´m not going to write too much... Ecuador is incredible (such an awful, stale word 'incredible'). The people are very friendly, and, interestingly enough, very interested in us. Everyone we meet wants to talk to us, know where we´re from, instead of trying to sell us something. As the months wear on, many travellers have vacated the country, returning to their homes after a summer abroad. There are not many foreigners (extraneros) in Loja, as of right now. The hills are golden amber, dry from months of harsh sun exposure. The sky is expansive, filled with clouds moving quickly across the sky, and lush green valleys settled between the hills. The valleys hold animals, banana trees (Ecuador is south america´s leading producer of bananas), papayas, avacados, scorpions, a particular, hallucinogenic cactus named San Pedro, ... read more

Sorry it´s been a while, but I´m just so busy as my days are shortly numbered!! Hope you enjoy...I´ll begin where I last left off! WEDNESDAY (7-26) Here we are in the beautiful city of Loja. Also known as the gateway to Peru via two border crossings. It reminds me a lot of Cuenca: the colonial style is around along with the narrow steets and friendly atmosphere. Though unlike Cuenca´s uniform architecture, Loja is more of a mix of gorgieous, antique 18th and 19th century buildings. It´s a very isolated city, but within the city´s gates you´d never know it. Very thriving and full of energy, Loja is the provincial capital within Loja; as Cuenca was in Azuay. We started the day off with breakfast at the hotel and proceed to the markets which were located ... read more

We arrived in Ecuador the night before their historic World Cup win over Costa Rica. The match was screened at 8am local time and after they secured their place in the next round, Ecuador erupted..... There was singing and dancing in the streets, drums and music, and eveyone, even the busdriver, wore their country's colours. That afternoon, we were wandering around Quito, visiting the stunning Plaza de Independencia and other such picturesque plazas and choice churches, when we found ourselves in the middle of one such impromptu party. We were soon adopted by a few local lads, held 'hostage' and forced to dance and party-on with the Ecuadorians! From Quito, we headed to Portoviejo. It's not an attractive town by anyone's standards so I therefore have no pictures to post! However, we were not here on ... read more

Well, disappointingly we are still in Ecuador as just before we were due to leave for Peru a couple of days ago I got sick from a stomach bug. After last time we decided to leave the 14 hour journey to Trujillo for another day! Hopefully we will be leaving tonight but as we´ve had a couple of false starts already we´re not committing to anything! It was sad to leave Vilcabamba, its so beautiful and peaceful. A little too peaceful when you fancy a bite to eat after 9pm! A group of us decided to head into the village on Tuesday night for some food, we were successful but only just and then had to walk the 2k uphill home because all the taxi drivers in town were either drunk or asleep! To anyone considering ... read more
