our last big stop in ecuador was in cuenca, the third largest city in the country. its a nice, colonial city but there wasnt much to do. we walked around, checked out the various markets (food and crafts), and went to the ice cream parlor a few times. we ended up spending more time here than we anticipated, because it took us longer to organize gear for our trek and sarah got sick (no, not of brett...just sick). once we were in cuenca, we decided that we wanted to go backpacking in nearby parque nacional cajas. which meant spending all of our first day there prepping to head into the backcountry. this included the grocery store (which was more of a glorified mini-mart), the cental market (for fruit and veggies), figuring out how to get to ... read more

Hi All, We got to Cuenca today, after 8 long hours on the bus (actually 1 hour to Ambato, and then 7 hours to Cuenca). We haven´t done much here yet, but we´re going to stay for 2 or 3 days, and then go to Peru (either through Loja or directly). Yesterday, Erev Rosh Hashana, we went horse back riding in Baños in the afternoon. It was not the most fun experience, because the horse kept bouncing, and Efrat´s horse kept eating plants at the side of the road. Also, we went very slowly (a little girl on a pink bicycle passed us). I´m glad we did it though, now I know I don´t really like riding horses. Later, we went to Erev Rosh Hashana dinner at an Israeli owned hostel. I was reminded very quickly ... read more

Greetings from the mitad del mundo aka the equator! After leaving the coast, we headed into the Colombian interior to Bogota. After a freezing cold (the bus drivers like to put the air con on full blast) 18 hour trip, we arrived in the Colombian capital. We spent a couple of days enjoying the side walk cafes, markets, and bustling atmosphere of the city as well as the cooler weather (the city is over 2000m in elevation and stays a nice 60-70 degrees- 15-20 C). We also took an excursion to a Salt Cathedral, which lies just outside of Bogota. The cathedral was opened in 1995 in the side of an active salt mine, apparently the biggest salt mountain in the world. On the last leg of our tour, our group bumped into a school group ... read more

I'm back in Lima and a little lighter in pocket...so I'm afraid the Jess and I are limited to a dodgy hostel..2 min noodles...and the Internet for fun..no museums..no culture..no booze. ( you can imagine the dire straits that things have reached). But this is all part of a story that will unfold a little later. Lets just say that our smooth sailing ended as soon as we left Banos..and the safety of having Swampy (our truck nearby). It was in Quito that I lost my shoes on swampy..luckily the sexy bugger was not far..and I was able to retrieve them..again..luck of the Irish. I would have been devastated to lose my hockey togs that have that mouldy, bacteria ridden smell. So...disaster (obviously major train crash if i had only flops to walk around in) averted..we ... read more

2 straight days of travelling has brought us to Cuenca, Ecuador. We arrived late in Quito and woke up at 6 in the morning to start a 10 hour bus ride. They don´t give you much time, or really any time, to get off the bus to stretch, use the wash room, or grad a bite to eat. But we are here and the scenary was amazing. Not for those who are scared of heights. C and J... read more

We left the jungle and headed on the longest journey yet to get to Ecuador, the last country before travelling back to London. A bit frustrating when you look on a map, as quite a short distance as the crow flys, managed to take a full 38 hours !!! We flew back to Lima, and boarded an overnight bus to the Ecuador border. The journey went quite smoothly until we hit the border, by far the worst and most scary border we have had to negotiate since we´ve been in South America. From what we understand, it is one of the most regular routes for drug / people / weapons traffic, with Peru producing a lot of the coca leaves used for Cocaine and Columbia the main producer before export to U.S and Europe. One of ... read more

Today, August 10th is a national holiday - Independence Day. We were picked up at 8 a.m by a new guide for a morning tour of the Cajas Park, a wild area about 30 Km West of Cuenca. On the way out, we saw huge pigs which had been slit then flattened being turned on spit roasts at roadside cafes for the holiday day trippers. The Cajas is a wild area, rather reminiscent of Wales or Scotland, but of course, much higher - between 3500 -4200 metres. It is often cloudy or raining so we were lucky to have a glorious sunny day. We made 3 stops, the first after ascending many hairpins to arrive at the Continental Divide at 4,200 metres. We only climbed a little way, but it left us breathless, and the wind ... read more

On our first morning in Cuenca, Jairo took us on a morning tour of the town - which is Ecuador's 3rd largest city. It is a beautiful town, and a World Heritage Site, with colonial architecture, cobbled streets and public plazas full of greenery. First stop was at a viewpoint on a hill above the town, from which we had a fabulous view, which really accentuated the style of architecture, as what was so striking was the multitude of red roofs below us. We then went to a famous ceramics studio, full of beautiful things, some of which which I couldn't resist the temptation to purchase, then on to the genuine panama hat factory. This is a local cottage industry, with the hats being made in the surrounding areas, then brought to the factory for finishing, ... read more

Travel Blog's server crashed this weekend--pretty much all the blog entries during the time I was posting were lost. Luckily, I have managed to recover most of them and Anitza (bless her!) has the other two saved for the scrapbooking project she's been making me. I will probably restore the text of the other entries at some point, but I’m not feeling rushed as you’ve all already seen them. And on the now related note, go here: http://flickr.com/photos/anitza/sets/72157600890951822/ and check out how awesome Anitza is! She has made me the most beautiful digital scrapbook pages for Inca Trail Trek. They are really spectacular! Now on to Cuenca--This entry is me complaining. You have been warned. All of you that know me know that my love for Ecuador runs very deep, but it is also complicated. There ... read more

This is my last blog from Cuenca since we'll be hitting the road soon bound for Quito. Fernando decided he didn't want to have anything to do with a 12 hour bus ride and a repeat of The Devil's Nose so he went to investigate flights. End result, we are flying out at 8:30 am tomorrow morning and then we will head up to Otavalo for our final stage of this journey. Otavalo is the home of the largest artesania market in the country and we should get some great deals on a few gifts/souvenirs. Steffani and I beat the sleepy-heads this morning and hit a new place for breakfast in a really interesting old building facing the park. It's called Cafe Raymipampa and what great value considering you get a choice of fresh fruit ... read more
