We have been at altitude several times and here it was no easier to get used to. Cuenca is about 2500 meters above sea level. We get to our Hostel and the room is 2 floors up. This means we get to our room and have to lean over the furniture gasping for breath for several minutes. The first day or so if you walk on the flat really slowly you can survive without looking like a real cardiac person. Any hill or hard work and there we are puffing away. I tried this time without altitude tablets because the last time I got side effects, tingling across my face (I thought I had some sort of food poisoning) and then the tingling moved to the tops of my feet and fingertips. Altitude also has another ... read more

Getting over the border to Ecuador was not much fun. There is this really dodgy town sitting in no mans lands where we had to wait while the truck immigration was sorted. For security were did not get off the truck, kept the door locked and windows up. And it was a very hot day. There was some definite melting going on inside. There were people everywhere outside selling dresses to puppies, and carts full of garlic or potatoes. Some had luggage in them as buses would generally turn around at the border, forcing people to walk through the dodgy town to the immigration office on the other side. Cuenca is a lovely town. Not too touristy, a working town. The tourist information office couldn´t even be bothered to open. The main square is filled ... read more

So this weekend was spent at home in Cuenca! On Friday afternoon, we went for some truck fun to Charros (our GAP representatives) hacienda in the mountains some where! Spent afternoon going on a little walk and then drinking a bit of good old canalazo to warm us up afterwards. Had a nice starter of cookies and the dinner...which was INCREDIBLE and one of the main reasons we went I think! Had red wine (granted from a carton), roast chicken, mash, CARROTS! and apple crumble!! Wohoo! Watched a couple of films and then curled up on the sofa..after having some cold chicken and mash although Kat was the main culprit there..! Went back to Cuenc on Sat morning and then back to bed for the afternoon! Saturday night we had a party at Sophie B´s house ... read more

Good day at school and I got to see the video of the kid's performance for Dia de la Madre that I missed last week. Lou's ballet actually looked very good despite her worrying. Met all the others after school randomly at the side of a road where Charo was going to pick us up. The boys went with her while the rest of us piled into her brother's truck for a very windy ride through Cuenca and then an equally bumpy ride up dirt tracks in the hills to Charo's hacienda. Not quite sure why she calls it a farm when the only sign of farming are a few cows behind her house who actually belong to someone else. Chilled out in the most gigantic double hammock ever before most of us (me not ... read more

Well I'm past the halfway mark and realised I haven't actually written anything about where I work. When I say realised I of course mean am reminded of that fact at every possible opportunity by certain people who are stuck in England with nothing better to do than check my blog all the time! Ok, my week days are as follows - Adinea from 8.00am until 12.30pm followed by Tadeo Torres from whenever we get there til whenever everything's finished. Adinea is a disabled school about fifteen minutes walk from where we live in Cuenca. I have no idea how many kids there are as I'm still discovering new classes (One of which I walked in on trying to take a short cut back from the kitchens today actually) There is absolutley no rhyme or ... read more

We were gutted to be leaving the Galapagos and will be taking away many happy memories and will hopefully be back one day. Next up was a very busy day to try and get to Cuenca. We landed back in Guayaquil at 1pm and were in a rush to get to the bus station for a 4 hour journey and try and get to Cuenca before it was dark as we didn’t fancy walking around in the dark looking for a hotel. We managed to get there in enough time and after checking out a few hotels we booked into Hotel Milan, I think somebody was taking the piss with that (After recently getting beat off them in the Champs league!) The hotel was very nice so can’t complain too much! Cuenca itself is a pretty ... read more

Lovely lazy Saturday morning chilling with the fam and that general kind of malarky..followed by the equally arduous task of preparing to go out that night before 2pm..seriously its actually not possible! Consequently we were late and once again our poor boys were stood waiting for us at an unfortuantely closed Aboriginal museo..instead we took them all to the Panama hat shop and hat chocolate, coffee and drew pictures on the massive pieces of paper that line the tables. Really cool idea! Ended up designing names and logo´s for Jack´s jazz group who have a gig in a big posh hotel! Wicked! Had a few drinks in Wunderbar (happy hour!) and played some pool, leaving Jack and Bel there to finish they´re very intense game of chess! We (Me, Kat, Matt and the Sophies) decided to ... read more

Yes, we spent ANOTHER weekend in Cuenca this weekend as Lyn, the representative from GAP came and visited us. That´s a whole two weekends I´ve now spent here since we arrived! Crazy! So, once again we got Friday morning off because all the disabled schools in Cuenca have a big meal..we found out how much our school loved us as we didn´t get invited and Sophie G did..! *Sniff sniff* To cheer us up, Kat and i went shopping..! After a lovely walk to the ice cream shop, along the river and around Cuenca, we went to the Panama hat shop! (although technically they are not Panama hats at all, they are an Ecuadorian invention). They're either sombrero de paja toquilla (toquilla straw-hat) or Montecristis named after the most famous hat making town in Ecuador. (Thanks ... read more
