We left you last time escaping Chile to Argentina. Well we have been here for about a month or something and it has been quite good to us. It has been quite different from any of the other countries we have been through (a lot more like home) but we have had some really cool experiences. We didn´t have enough time to do justice to the whole country so after spending a couple of days in Mendoza (where Carissa would have studied if she didn´t return to NZ ;-), which was a nice place to chill and get used to being [View Full Entry]

lake titicaca, bolivia
Before we made it to Bolivia, we stopped at Puno, on lake Titicaca near the border. There is not much in Puno, but its the access point to Lake Titicaca's famous floating islands. While the idea that the locals have been living on these floating islands made of reeds for hundreds of years is very cool, the part we got to see (while interesting for a little while) was quite disappointing. One of the most blatantly touristy things we have done. Luckily for us, Bolivia was only a few hour bus ride away. It was so nice to get there. The [View Full Entry]

We have just finished Peru and we are both thrilled to have spent some time in the Andes!! We spent our first few days staying at a beach town called Huanchaco, where Carissa spent a few weeks a on an uni / college archeology trip a few years back. She enjoyed showing me all the sites of note and let me know on more than one occasion that the place had changed for better or worse. From there we took a bus to Huraz (sea level to 3000m) and quickly new we were up high. We had 3 flights of stairs [View Full Entry]

Greetings from the mitad del mundo aka the equator! After leaving the coast, we headed into the Colombian interior to Bogota. After a freezing cold (the bus drivers like to put the air con on full blast) 18 hour trip, we arrived in the Colombian capital. We spent a couple of days enjoying the side walk cafes, markets, and bustling atmosphere of the city as well as the cooler weather (the city is over 2000m in elevation and stays a nice 60-70 degrees- 15-20 C). We also took an excursion to a Salt Cathedral, which lies just outside of Bogota. The [View Full Entry]

Hi all, hope this finds you all well. As you have probably guessed we have made it to south america. Sounds easy dosent it? Well i wasn´t! We decided to take the road less traveled and make our way to Columbia by flying to a remote Panamaian boarder town on the Carribean coast and catch a series of small boats to the first major Columbian city. I sounded easy enough until we arrived at the boarder town (viallage) but without my pack. Usually not a big issue but there were only 3 flights a week and its not accessable by road [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, hope you are all well! Before we start, our last blog entry (from Nicaragua) has been lost so if anyone has a copy, online or not, if you could lets us know, that would be most appreciated. I really can't be bothered writing it again and we have probably forgotten most of it. Anyway, we are now in Panama, on a small island in the Cribbean (once again ;-). We spent our two weeks on the Chocolate farm in Costa Rica and had a great time. We would work for 4-5 houres in the morning and have the afternoons [View Full Entry]

Hola. We are currently in a small town called San Pedro (some of you might recognize the name js, tobz and dyls ;-). It’s a sweet as place on the edge of a huge crater lake surrounded by smaller volcanoes. Its the rainy season so it often pours down in the afternoon and evening with spectacular lightening and thunder. The mornings are usually calm and hot!! Perfect for swimming in the lake so we have been skipping showers and joining the locals for a wash in the lake. We are into our second week at a Spanish school where Carissa [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, After a pretty uneventful journey, we arrived in Guatemala. We sat next to a really friendly Guatemalan woman on the plane, and shortly after takeoff, she informed me that we should expect a 'fun' landing as the runway in guatemala was surrounded by mtns and very short. She continued to mime the plane nose diving and then screeching to a halt, so needless to say I was a bit anxious. In the end. The landing proved not so eventful. On a whim, we took a shuttle bus from the airport to Antigua guatemala, which has a quaint colonial feel [View Full Entry]

Just finishing up some last minute details, packing, sorting, panicking and what not. I managed to get my pack weight down to about 23lbs (10kg), and I'm sure within a few weeks I'll whittle it down even more. It's quite fun to see how light you can go - I definitely beat Josh, but he's carrying a lot of shared items. Better finish off the last few things and attempt some sleep. With a bit of luck, the next entry will be from somewhere in Guatemala. [View Full Entry]
