It was time for me to move onward and upward, to the La Hesperia reserve in the Andes highlands of Ecuador! It was a very different experience than my coastal volunteering, mostly in the respect that it didn´t feel so much like a slave labor camp :) but also in the fact that we were isolated from the world and living on an 800 hectare cloud forest rainforest reserve (with horizontal rain, new and exciting!) and working dairy farm! There were a few major projects in the works as I arrived, and I was able to participate in whatever interested me at the time! hoy es navidad… es un dia de alegria y felicidad Meine Weihnachtswoche begann mit der “Fiesta de los Ninos” im CRN. Schon Tage vorher haben wir damit zugebracht unendlich viele Tueten mit Keksen und Süssigkeiten zu füllen und am 21. war dann der grosse Tag, nach und nach kamen die Mamas mit ihren Kindern und die Wiese vor dem CRN füllte sich immer mehr. Dann hatten Anja und ich unseren grossen Auftritt als Isabel und Maria im Krippenspiel und zugegeben, vorher war ich ziemlich nervös, weil Theaterspielen ja nicht unbedingt zu meinen Stärken gehört und auf Spanisch ist das dann nochmal schlimmer. Es ist aber alles gut gegangen… danach mussten wir uns dann schnell als Clowns verkleiden und durften dann trötend und tanzend zwischen den Kindern rumhampeln und alle anmalen… sehr lustig. Santo Domingo, meine Arbeit, mein Leben ;) Einfach mal sone bunte Mischung aus meinem Alltag hier. Ich mach ja schliesslich nicht nur Urlaub und es ist auch nicht alles nur schoen und bunt (hast du schon Recht, Papa)... In Sto.domingo habe ich im Colegio Alemàn 6 verschiedene Klassen jeweils 2 Stunden pro Woche unterrichtet. Die Schüler waren zwischen 12 und 20 Jahre alt und kamen aus der Mittelschicht. Ich habe sie für ein ganzes Trimester unterrichtet was mir sehr viel Spass gemacht hat. Ausserdem war es eine einzigartige Erfahrung. In der Schule habe ich 2 tage pro Woche unterrichtet und die restlichen 3 Tage habe ich im Centro de Recuperacion nutricional (Ernährungszentrum) als Hilfskrankenschwester gearbeitet. In diesem Ernährungszentrum haben sie den Fokus vorallem auf unterernährte Kinder. Viele Mütter die wir im Zentrum hatten waren selber noch Kinder(zum Teil 13,14 jährig) und hatten keine Ahnung wie man ein Kind grosszieht, was dazu führte, dass sie ihre Kinder falsch oder mangelhaft ernährt haben was sie schliesslich teilweise freiwillig teilweise unfreiwillig zu uns ins Zentrum führte. ... read more

Getting to work at the Centro for Recuperative Nutrition was like getting to work at a live-in WIC clinic. Great career experience (plus we were indoors with AC, could I ask for anything better?) and it also gave me the opportunity to put to use some of my dietary advice for hypertension and anemia more-so than when working with the other populations because there seemed to be a greater awareness of their dietary correlations. Still, it is frustrating trying to explain to many people that their conceptions about anemia are inaccurate.
