morgendlich kühles licht weckt uns durch das große fenster. wieder wogen grasfelder unter feuchtem wind. das unberechenbare ecuadorianische wetter reißt nur so an den wolken, wirft sie über die bergspitzen am horizont. ein letztes luxus-frühstück in dem wunderbaren, kamingeheizten, speisesaal. mit den urigen holzbalken in der rustikal weißen decke. mit glasflächen im dach. keine wände, nur fensterflächen, um keinen winkel des cotopaxi zu verpassen. in kleinen nischen stehen schwarze madonnen, jesu-kindlein. eispickel und hufeisen an den wenigen wänden. auch drinnen fühlt man sich wie in österreich. wie in einer schicken ski-hütte. der vormittag wird noch gemütlich in der höhe verbracht. mit einer kleinen jogging-einheit auf gut 3.600m. das geht allerdings nur mit rückenwind. und ohne steigung. alles andere ist “beuschl-reißer”! zurück in quito beziehen wir unser airport-nahes hotel.... read more

unser erster hochzeitstag. wir verbringen ihn am fuße des cotopaxi, den gesamten vormittag über auf den rücken der pferde. gemeinsam mit unserem guia, juan, trotten wir gemächlich zum park-entry und von dort in den offiziellen teil des nationalparks. entlang malerischer kleiner bäche und durch hohes gras, felsige wege. teils riesige schluchten, canyons, bewachsene steilhänge mit gemütlichen flüssen in deren mitte, breiten sich zu unserer seite aus. sobald die abgründe etwas flacher sind, steigen wir auf unseren pferden hinab, durchqueren die gewässer und strotzen dem orkanartigen sturm. immer wieder peitscht feiner regen horizontal gegen unsere gesichter. wände aus feinem wasser schleudert uns der wind entgegen. trotz winddichter jacken wird es nach einer stunde schon recht ungemütlich - wie gut, dass wir es vor einem jahr weitaus wärmer hatten! die braven pferde halten tapfer die köpfe ... read more

During my first few years back in Ecuador I spent 3-4 months a year at my cabana on the coast, but once I decided to sell that property I boxed up all my possessions. Each year when I go back to the states I bring down another suitcase full of stuff, and most everyone who has come to visit has also brought a bag. I left a few pre-packed carry-ons in an Atlanta friend's attic and one by one those have arrived. So, as my belongings accumulated I stored them in a big closet in Shana's guest house where I always stayed when I came to Banos. Tuesday 13th Our taxi arrives as we are having breakfast and quickly takes us to the other end of Santa Cruz and we hop on the little ferry that takes us across to Baltra and the airport. We arrive in plenty of time for the plane back to the main land. We get talking to an English couple and she turns out to be the sister in law of a woman I play tennis with ! Such a small world. We arrive in Guayaquil and get picked up by taxi and taken to our hostel. It's on the 7th floor of an apartment block and we have a small balcony which looks over the traffic jams ! Still the woman running it is nice and gives us loads of info. We decide to take a walk ... read more

Thursday 27th March (Odyssey Day 139) Leaving the Galapagos Islands was simple enough to do in theory, though we were all reluctant to end our little holiday. We had had such a great time and now it would be back to the real world. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, the fact we are still travelling and will soon be back in Peru is certainly enough incentive to return to Quito without complaint. As we could not check in for our flight until 1130, we relaxed in the terminal to wait. I read a book for a while and when we eventually checked our luggage in, I took the opportunity to browse through the souvenir shops at the airport.
