Banos - Day 14 Today was a long travel day, destination Banos. We took a cab to the bus station to catch a 7:30am bus to Ambato. There are no direct buses from Cuenca to Banos, so had to change buses in Ambato for Banos. The Ambato bus was a seven hour ride, $8.00 per person. As we exited Cuenca, we went by huge green hills and valleys. Many sheep and cows. The houses on the hills were very nice, more affluent than we expected. This turned out to be a slow bus, making many stops. We must have went by over a thousand cows and now understand why there is so much cheese in Ecuador. Passed through a couple of small towns, Biblian and Azogues. Saw some unusual sights in these areas--a whole pig on ... read more

Quilotoa - 11/27/2014 - Day 4 Happy Thanksgiving! Plan for today is to get to Quilotoa. We skipped breakfast and headed out to get a cab to the bus station. First cab quoted us $15, but we thought that was too much for a fairly short distance. Driver then went to $12, then $10. Bob then asked another cab and got a price of $8 right away. Guess which one we took? The driver did take a very roundabout route to avoid the traffic at 7:30am. (Gas is cheap here, $2 a gallon.) Traffic in Quito is unbelievable, wouldn't want to drive here. Took about half an hour to get to the Terminal Quitumbe. The terminal was very large and modern, looked quite new. First bus took us to Latacunga, south along the Panamericana highway. Very ... read more

On returning from the Galapagos Islands, first thing I did was hop straight on a bus for the adventure capital of Ecuador, Banos. Having somehow broken my kindle on my cruise in the Galapagos I was the recipient of some divine inspiration as I reliazed there was also a kindle app which I could download to my phone where I could continue reading on those long bus journeys.. Marching Powder, Killing Escobar and Born to Run all since read! BANOS Theres something about Banos that I cant quite put my finger on but in conversation with a fellow turistica a few days later we both agreed that if you had to pick a place in South America to live Banos would be one of our top choices (Sucre and Cusco being my other two). The town ... read more

Hola Blog Followers! I spent only a couple of weeks alone at home, but I thoroughly enjoyed them! I had a few Scrabble dates with Shana, regular visits to the hot springs, gal pal lunches, and some artistic "bauble" time in my "art studio" located on the sunny upstairs landing of my staircase. Such fun to pull out all of my beads and shells and gems, bits and bobs, to stimulate my creative juices and visualize beautiful projects. In September I enjoyed a visit from my indigenous friends, the Sacatoro family of Malingua Pamba. They stayed overnight with their Mama Julia (me) in my big rental house, and we enjoyed many tourist sites in and around Banos. We visited waterfalls, took the "tarabita" tramway over the river, soaked in the hot springs and walked all over ... read more

I awoke with the sun, in a small but comfortable room with a concrete floor and a bamboo roof, covered thankfully by a corrugated metal roof. It had rained some during the night, but I says totally unaware, except perhaps in my dreams. I had slept "como un tronco", like a tree trunk, the Spanish equivalent of like a log. The power was still off when I got out of bed, so I splashed some cold water on my face and spent the time until breakfast examining the status of my once lost but now found luggage. With the exception of a couple of things saturated with honey, everything else was intact. I rearranged my belongings, separating what remained of my clean clothes from those in need of a good cleaning, which consisted of items of ... read more

Last night's sleep in Baños was much better than the two previous night's. For one thing, the noise level within the hotel was not bad, and though the hotel was on the busy highway going from Baños to the Amazon basin, there was little traffic noise from the street. The hotel was like most Ecuadorian hotels in that it was a family run affair. The desk clerk was the nephew of the owner, had spent a number of years abroad, and spoke English well. He was also frustrated by the keyboard of the guest computer as well. After a nice breakfast of rolls, juice and coffee, I headed into town. So that I wouldn't have to lug my heavy backpack around all day, I thought I might find my next night's accommodation and see if I ... read more

Today I struck out for Banos, which should be spelled with the squiggly line over the N, but as luck would have it, the keyboard at the hotel in Banos, where Espanol is the native language, doesnt have it. I suppose I could search for a word with that silly n in it and copy and paste it everytime, but I´m too lazy for that. (its hard enough just figuring out all the other letter positions, let alone do anything fancy, so the reader will just have to indulge me and think N as in ONION when they see the name Banos spelled out). I had considered taking a taxi from the hotel to the central bus station in Quito that services the southern portion of the country, including the aforementioned improperly spelled Banos. So I ... read more

Auch ... read more

After a year's hiatus I found myself once again working as driver/interpreter for a group of volunteers from the Denver/Boulder chapter of Engineers without Borders (EWB). This visit was the continuation of work on a potable water system project in Guantugloma, a village above Malingua Pamba where we were housed. On their last visit the engineers oversaw the construction of distribution tanks; now it was time to lay all the pvc pipes to 'connect the dots' and articulate the system. Since this group of volunteers (John, Daniela, Russ & Alejandro) all spoke Spanish quite well, my job was mostly driving. The roads are much better than they used to be, still unpaved but smoother and safer. I averaged 30-40 miles a day up and down the hill between the 'hostel' (at Paulino's house) and the various ... read more

Hola Personas! This, along with the next few blovels, will be from around South America, but first a tiny backstory on how I'm even here. A year and a half ago I flew to Vail, Colorado to stay with a friend and ski. That friend had two Aussie friends visiting. I became friends with them and we stayed in contact via Facebook. Bec is one of those friends, with whom I'm now traveling! So…. small world in a way, crazy some may say, but either way... now we sit in Peru. We went back and forth on doing a tour, or by ourselves, or this and that, but essentially… we don't speak Spanish. In my opinion, it's extremely close to impossible to get around here without a large and very conversational Spanish vocabulary. Looking back, I ... read more
