'Nuff said - simply being able to come and ride through this fantastic country is a major result, as up until recently, there's no way that Foreign Office advice would have allowed an overland bike trip like this to take place (insurance etc). Here's the story since Panama... Crossing the Darien Gap This is one hundred miles of swamp and jungle that separates Panama from Colombia. For economic/geographical/logistical/political reasons (choose one or more of the above), no-one has yet built a road through it, so we had to park ourselves (and our bikes) into planes for the one hour flight to Bogota. Riding Colombia! The tourist industry for Gringos is steadily trying to get back on its feet here, after a number of years of 'issues'. Hence, the BMW bike dealerships in Bogota and Medellin were ... read more

Finally, I am flying solo! So, after saying goodbye to Ariel, I hopped on a night bus to Popayan. Normally, I have been sleeping pretty well on these buses but, this time, I was sitting next to a Colombian teen who seemed to turn inquisitive only when I was asleep! Thus, I arrived in Popayan the next day on little sleep. Popayan is a beautiful, white-washed colonial town with lots of universities. In fact, Popayan is the birthplace of more Colombian presidents than any other city! It also lays claim to being the birthplace of Caldas, who discovered the use of boiling temperatures in order to determine altitude. I walked around and enjoyed the city for most of the day but was getting seriously tired. I returned to my hostel to find it pretty dead for ... read more

Well this is the final South American country that we are visiting on this trip (bar our small re-entry to Peru to get to Lima) and we were excited about it. On our travels up through the other countries we had mixed reports about Colombia. - Some people said "don't go its dangerous.....what with Cocaine traffikers, FARC Guerrilla's and Colombian paramilitary!" - Other people we met said, "Go! It is one of the most beautiful and safest countries in South America. Everyone is very friendly and it has hardly any tourists". The first set of people were those who had not been to Colombia themselves and the latter were those who had! The South of Colombia certainly rings true to the latter comments. Most of the tourists we met were Colombians on holiday themselves and the ... read more

Day 732 (31.03.09) We spent the morning visiting the market in the town of Sylvia, a little over an hour away from Popayan on the local bus. Every Tuesday this small town plays host to a big market where local indigenous folk come down from their remote villages to stock up on all their requirements for the next week. Purely there for the locals it makes a great place to go and see local life in full flow. The people from the area attend the market in their usual traditional dress and we had a great time wandering around and watching the shopping and socialising in progress. After a couple of hours we made a move as we were headed to San Augustin that afternoon trying to pack in as much as possible in our last ... read more

Day 731 (30.03.09) After getting a few things done in the morning we set off with Vic to explore town. We spent some time wandering around the grid of streets lined with grand white-washed buildings with ornate windows and lanterns hanging from each corner. Not a huge stop on the tourist trail it makes for a good place to wander and watch local life going on around you. There are also lots of things to do in the surrounding area and had we not already spent more time than we planned to in Colombia we might have stayed longer! John joined us in the afternoon for more planned wandering but just as we set off it began to rain...and rain...and rain. Looking for a place to shelter we stumbled upon the local pool hall and dropped ... read more

I thought I would be looking forward to getting back to a city again after a good stint in the country but to be honest if I can have the chice of being woken up by cows mooing or big horrible trucks going past my window at 5am I know which one I will choose. The girls and I were obviously very happy to get to Popayan and get off the bus from hell!! We checked into a hostel full of priomise called Hostel Trail. It was set up by a couple who had initiated a website connecting all of the hostels together across south america and on their travels they ended up in Popayan and realised the need for more hostels. It was a lovely place and I'm amost ashamed to say that the thing ... read more

Rumour had it that negotiating for long-distance bus fares was par for the course in Colombia but I couldn't bring myself to try, as the price given to me by the smartly-uniformed gentleman at the kiosk seemed reasonable and he was already printing off the ticket before I'd even had a chance to fire off a counter-offer. There was some excellent scenery on the way to Popayan - lushly-forested steep slopes culminating in misty ridges, which reminded me of southern China. We encountered only one roadblock, manned by police, at which everyone had to produce ID, and arrived in Popayan at lunchtime, where I said farewell to the other English chap, who was continuing on to Cali. Popayan is (yet) another White City, which I was keen to see as Colombia's most famous colonial town, Cartagena, ... read more

Irgendjemand antwortet dann immer.

Der ... read more
