Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Well I'm still here in Medellin, things have turned to some unexpected turns. Currently my $$ point is at 170k pesos are about $85USD. The business venture I had planned on turned sore(the man I was going to do business with died) so here I am with no concrete ideas. I don't have enough cash to return home(Costa Rica) my wife is five monthes pregnant, and I'm here stuck in Colombia. But I do have options, will try to call an associate in Bocas del Toro(Panama) to see f he can wire me at least $150USD. The other option is to [View Full Entry]

Where I started Antonio Martinez-VasquezIt's Monday and I've in beautiful Medellin, Colombia for about five days. It's changed alot since I was last here in 2000. But the changes are extremely positive. There's a good likelihood of leaving tonight or tomorrow for Panama City. I started an impromptu import/export business: in order to finance my travels. During the past two years, I've been to Trinidad, Peru(it stinks) Equador(three steps up from Peru) Nicaragua(quite different from 1978-80) all throughout Central America. But th [View Full Entry]

Medellin was next up and we had a lovely 15 hour bus journey to look forward to! To add to the excitement we were a bit nervous about this one as it was our first overnight bus journey in Colombia and we have heard about night buses being stopped and robbed. We looked on the Lonely planet website and there was a girl that was robbed and had a gun to her head throughout the ordeal and this was in a place we would be travelling through! The poor girl was in her first week of a year trip and it [View Full Entry]

yes i didn't really get out with the camera too much... i wonder why?
So i decided to check out the close by city of Medellin since my time in south america is rapidly coming to an end... what did i find? well quite a nice city in my opinion not quite as nice as Bogota but quite similar in many ways once the drug trafficing capital of the world today it seems quite a safe but busy city. in the centre, markets line the streets selling rip off brands i almost picked up a pair of 'puna' (puma) shoes for a bargin price but they didn't have my size. Medellin is also the [View Full Entry]

words to be added later about my first footie game in latin america which was Independiente Medellin versus Nacionales of Medellin or as it is called here ´El Clasico´.....the team nacional incendently have had many famous players in the past and there fans are notorious for violence having killed one of the colombian squad members after the world cup in USA 1994. anyway, i set in the neutral area to say the least to enjoy the passion of the 2-2 draw between teams placed second and third in the colombian primera liga. next for the copa TOYATA libertadores...........somewhere [View Full Entry]

Ylhäältä oli hyvät maisemat
Lento Bogotaan meni kivuttomasti vaikkakin välissä oli pysähdys Quitossa (Ecuadorissa). Laskeutuminen oli hätäisin tähän mennessä. Kummallekin tuli pienoinen kylmä hiki koneen pompsahtaessa kiitoradasta ja sen heiluessa puolelta toiselle jarrutuksen aikana. Bogotassa oltiin joskus puoli kuuden aikaan illalla.

Vilken arkitektur, vilken stamning!
