We have been travelling for seven months now and had always planned on finding a place to stay for a while. We chose Medellin due to the climate, Bogota is too cold and rainy, and the coast is too hot and humid. Perched in the middle of the country, in the mountains of the coffee region, Medellin is known as the city of eternal spring. This is not like any spring I have known, it has been pushing on for 30 degrees every day since we’ve been here. For a city it is very green and as it is in a valley you can always see the countryside. Where we have been staying there is a stadium complex with free open air swimming pools and every form of sport you can imagine. As the sun is ... read more

Our Arrival We arrived at terminal del norte at 8:50am on a 6:30pm night bus from Cartagena. The terminal is well signed in English as well as Spanish and has a tourist information booth where you can pick up a map. The tourist information was actually unmanned when we were there, the person left as soon as a bus pulled in so we helped ourselves to a map which was followed by some stern words by a security guard. To get to the metro from the arrivals area go down one floor and walk along the bridge over the road. The metro station is Caribe. The ticket office is on the right and is COP$1,900 per journey. Put the ticket in the barrier and it keeps it. We caught the metro at 9:10am and got to ... read more

Ecuador and Colombia The Galapagos were out of this world. The one down side was that they had lapped up the majority of our Ecuador time. It meant that we now only had a week to see the delights that the mainland had to offer. We were busy trying to plan this out and decide what we wanted to do when the Capitan put on the fasten seat-belts sign for landing. Becky's movements were a lot brisker and she spoke curtly as she stowed her table tray and returned her seat to the upright position. She checked and then double checked her seatbelt to make sure it was securely fastened. I had picked up on her palpable tension when we were taking off and thought some tough love may finally get her over her fear of ... read more

Tuesday 11th March (Odyssey Day 123) We were having a very late start today, planning to leave at 1200 and have lunch on the road. So we had our eggs for breakfast before spending some time catching up on the internet and packing our bags. I have too much stuff at the moment, and really need to do a bit of a clean out of my luggage. No point in carrying things around that I won’t be using any more (or that are broken). I’ll make time for that at the next hotel. Kelly and Eamon decided to remain in Medellin for another week and meet up with us in Cali, while Joanna and Ann decided to spend one more day in Medellin and get a bus to Guatapé tomorrow to meet up with us there. ... read more

Saturday 8th March (Odyssey Day 120) We had a 0900 departure and said our goodbyes to Maddie and Lou this morning. They will be staying on in Cartagena for a bit, then doing an abbreviated trip including Machu Picchu, before heading back home to England. So now we have lost four more members of our group, and re-gained one. It feels noticeably emptier on the truck now. Driving along some high, winding roads, we saw some random single bright yellow trees. It was a bit odd as they were the only real colour around for a long time. There were a lot of police checks on this stretch and we had to stop a few times, though never for very long. Instead of camping, we stopped for the night at pretty much the only place we ... read more

Day One - 27 December 2013 – Friday – Flight from Aruba, Caribbean to Medellin, Colombia. We awoke a few times in the night, a little worried that we might miss our early morning flight. We got up just before 5am (had to wake a receptionist), checked out and drove to the airport. We checked in for our flight and then returned the rental car. We had to wait for someone to show up for work (supposed to arrive at 6am, got there around 6:30. A manager-type man was in the office early but he wouldn’t check the car back in. ‘Just leave it,’ he said). That is Aruba. Short flight to Curacao, twenty minutes. Then the flight to Medellin, less than two hours. Local bus into town. Glimpses of the mountains surrounding the city in ... read more

Where to stay in Medellin? There are lots of choices as Medellin is a large metropolitan city. My first choice is always to locate an apartment in the area of the city I will spend most of my time exploring and whenever possible access to public transportation. Luckily for me Medellin has many options along those lines and at affordable prices. I have had great success locating homes or apartments using the website www.airbnb.com across multiple countries. The website again proved its worth with a 2 bedroom apt in a quiet part of Poblado for an average night stay of under $50US. The building, furnishing and appliances were all modern and in good working order. The security was excellent and the view outstanding as I was on the 24th floor. The apartment building was situated high ... read more

After another bumpy ride through the mountains we arrived to Medellin, the capital of the Antioquia departemento. Nowadays Medellin is peaceful, but it used to be the most dangerous city in the world 20 years ago, when the gangster king Pablo Escobar terrorized it. Today most of Pablo Escobars heritage has been wiped out; instead the presence of the other famous son of Medellin, Fernando Botero, is much more visible with statues in several places around the city. We had our hostel within walking distance from the city center, so our first morning we decided to stroll there. Our initial positive impression changed once we got to the smelly river separating our peaceful neighborhood from the city center, after that we entered a shady looking part of the city that apparently acts as an open door ... read more
