The reason for the title of this blog is that I have to go back. I am ashamed to say that I arrived in Medellin at 8.30pm on Thursday night and met up with some really cool guys I met in Bogota and I left at 1.30pm on Tuesday and the only time I made it out of my hostel was to go to nightclubs. I stayed at a great hostel if you want to party called PitStop. Swimming pool, bar that is open all night and access to many night clubs!! I usually partied all night and slept all day! Had a brilliant time but decided that I had to get out of there so caught the bus 7 hours back on myself to a place called Salento for R&R (again!!) and detox!... read more

Medellin has got a pretty bad name as home to Pablo Escobar´s drugs operation. But this town couldn´t be any cleaner and full of nicer people, even though the Hostel we stayed in was wall to wall American arrogance. We were just outside Zona Rosa, the South American term for the nightlife area. We arrived after a long overnight bus ride and the others went straight to sleep, while I went for a stroll around our area and found the local hotspots, in particular a string of bars around a central plaza, which at night would become my home for the next few nights. The first day, we went into Centro via a shopping mall. Centro wasn´t giving much, so we headed back to Zona Rosa and had a few cervezas in the hostel bar watching ... read more

Medellin Some people will know the city of Medellin as once being declared the most dangerous city in the world due to the number of murders per population. This was however during the main years of Pablo Escobar's reign as drug lord supremo. Pablo's time ended in 1993 after a long and arduous joint operation between the Colombian police and US special forces which resulted in Pablo´s white sneakers turning toes up. We had heard that Medellin was now a decent place for a bit of a fiesta.... we have since found that this was a bit of an understatement. On our first night we strolled into the Zona Rosa (a square of bars full of partying Colombians and Gringos) planning a quiet meal, couple of drinks and a moonlight stroll back to the hostel. In ... read more

Joy Contagion The Medellín River runs through the center of the city. Near one of the primary bridges that crosses it, there is a cluster of parks and pathways that run alongside. Every year, for most of the month of December – and well into January – a spectacular array of Christmas lights known as Los Alumbrados is on display along the river. Hundreds of luminous, plantlike fixtures rise up out of the water. Dozens of scenes are constructed featuring animatronic figures that move around. Each season brings a completely different display than that of the year before, and an entire industry has grown up around the world-famous event. A small crowd of us from the hostel spend an hour or so walking around and looking at all the different light displays. Streams of families, couples, ... read more

Fruit of the Gods I stare at the mango. The mango – cleverly donned in a camouflage swirl of red, orange and yellow – just sits there. But it knows I can see it. It wants me to. Overhead, the supermarket's PA system cranks out a bad fusion of Muzak and salsa rhythms that aren't made any better by the whine of aging fluorescent lights. The problem here is very simple. One morning while living in Brazil earlier this year, I woke up in a mild panic. One eye was swollen mostly shut. My lips were easily double their normal size, and the rest of my lower face was covered in a horribly itchy rash. A few hours of research online carried out against everything I had eaten in the previous 48 hours revealed the cause. ... read more

Somewhere along the line, wiseass software developers such as myself made a resolute decision to include progress bars at the bottom of web browsers to indicate how far along it is in downloading the requested web page. This decision was made either in total ignorance or sardonic mockery of the average Wi-Fi connection in a South American hostel. Which is why, seated cross-legged in a huge, over-stuffed armchair at the Palm Tree Hostel in Medellín, I have spent the past six minutes staring like a fool at the colorful little bar on my screen that cheerfully reports 75% success in downloading my email inbox while the rest of the window shows nothing but a blank hypertext void – on the fourth attempt. The sound of laughter pulls my attention up from the screen. Across the ... read more
