Bogota Travel Blogs

Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Buenos Diaz Bogotá: Things are pretty cool in Bogotá in fact its freezing cold & it rains in big huge thunderstorms most days around 3 PM! I didn’t realise somewhere so close to the equator could be so cold, I guess its got something to do with the fact we are almost at 10000 ft. After arriving at Bogota Airport, Danny & I decided it would be prudent to share taxi costs & have safety in numbers so we headed into town & stayed at a great hostel called El Cafecito, a lovely big old house with big rooms, fireplaces & [View Full Entry]

Danny & I visited Monserrate, the church on the top of one of the highest hills overlooking Bogota where they had a little alley behind that sold everything from Jesus on a rope soap to fried intestines & beer, just what you need before going to church! You take a gondola to the top a bit like Sugar Loaf mountain in Rio except not as classy. There’s a cable car just like Wellington’s but 5 times the size it was broken the day we went up. Andy the Aussie & I went to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. It’s an underground [View Full Entry]

So after the dodgy goings on with Santiago & his friend Charles I headed off to another place called Cha Cha Night Club on the top floor of a skyscraper, great club with stunning views over the city, see photo! Anyway it was about time to leave Bogota & head for the beach & the sun when I discovered that DJ Sacha was playing another fabulous club called “The End” on the roof of a hotel so I opted to stay to the end of the week & have one more BIG night out before heading to the Caribbean. I wasn’t [View Full Entry]

It´s very strange starting my blog again. I feel like a bit of a con when I´m only away for 5 weeks so I´m not really a long-haul traveller anymore. I was waiting to be inspired before I started it & it just so happens that I´m not fit for sight-seeing at the moment too after a very large almuerzo (a 2-3 course meal at the middle of the day...a lot of carbs too) so now is as good a time as any to start!! I arrived in Bogota on the Saturday of the May bank -holiday weekend. It´s a massive [View Full Entry]

We have set eyes on church after church in Latin America. At times it seems there is one on every block. Every village, town and city is dominated by churches. Their architecture is unique so each one stands out from the other town buildings. The main plaza always has one if not two churches. Apparently the theory behind this is obedience. During the Spanish conquest, every town was designed around a central plaza. As crown and church drank from the same cup, by placing a church in the place where people congregated (still do today), it was as though a higher [View Full Entry]

After the Colombia vs Bolivia game we spent a few more days in Bogota saying goodbye to our friend John who we had been travelling with for almost 6 weeks, sharing similar problems with parting with Colombia. So after a big weekend and recovery in the best hostel either of us have ever stayed in we headed to the coffee region for some fresh air and relaxation once again. We arrived in a suitably small pretty town called Salento where we ambled around for a few days, eating the local speciality of trout in various forms and experienced an unexpectedly arduous [View Full Entry]

Beginning of a long night out in Bogota

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA “Isn’t Colombia dangerous?” I can already hear you thinking. Yes and no. Of the top 10 most dangerous countries Iraq tops the charts, followed by Colombia, and then the USA. Apparently Bogota is statistically safer than Washington D.C. “Yeah, but Washington D.C. is only dangerous if you go to the really seedy parts.” Exactly. And Alvardo Uribe, Colombia’s newest president has done a lot to clean up this country. Gone are the days of tourists kidnappings (as long as you stay out of the Darien Gap) and a huge dent has been put i [View Full Entry]

Whilst we were in San Gil, we were made aware of the fact that Colombia were entertaining Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier in Bogota. We had made friends with a group of English lads and a couple of Irish too, and with us all being in Bogota that particular weekend decided that we should check out the match. While in San Gil we met the nicest man in the world, a Colombian called Samuel. He very generously offered to get us all tickets to the game which his sister who lived in Bogota could buy on her credit card. Without [View Full Entry]

There were wonderful panoramic views from the top.
Saturday 28.03.09 Today I planned to go up the fenicular to Cerro Monserrate - one of the steep hills surrounding Bogata. At over 3,000 metres above sea level it offers great panoramic views of the city. On top of the hill there is a beautiful little historic church with a statue of Señor Caido (the fallen Christ) to which is attributed many miracles. The path from the top of the fenicular to the church had 14 bronze sculptures of the stations of the cross. When I came back down I strolled around the east side of the city, but nothing of [View Full Entry]
