well not much to write about galapagos continued to be awesome more snorkelling etc... and after 8 days on a boat it was time for us to get off and stagger towards the plane on our sealegs... we flew into quito and quickly went to the bus station and were off to tulcan which is in northern ecuador near the colombian boarder... we spent a night there in a super cheep but fairly sketchy hostel and the next day cabbed to the boarder... on the ecuador side we waited for about 2 hours to get our exit stamps as the computers were down and they didn´t feel like processing by hand so when we eventually got them done we walked over the bridge to colombia which was a breeze... form the boarder town of ipiales we ... read more

Today was my birthday, and I had a rude awakening at 5am for the next stage in my adventures. We were heading for Colombia, and it was to be a long day of travel. We had to allow extra time in case of problems at the Ecuador/Colombian border. For this portion of my travels, I decided to use an overland adventure company called Dragoman. They are one of only two companies worldwide who enter Colombia, due to the volatile situations and potentially dangerous areas. I thought it would be safer to use a company with good local knowledge and track record. We made it through the border without incident, and drove to a small airfield at Ipianos. We had to fly to the capital, Bogota, because to travel overland would take us through rebel-controlled areas. Meanwhile, ... read more

Getting to Bogota This was the 4th leg of our Dragoman trip. We started in Quito and went to Otavalo where we had already been. It was a little more interesting this time because we caught the Saturday market. Didn't buy much but it was lovely to experience the full market with streets and streets of stalls. We left Otavalo very early in the morning. The hotel provided us with a packed breakfast. It was a couple of hours drive to the Colombian border. We were stamped out of Ecuador and into Colombia without incident. A guy called Russ met us at the border to help us get to the airport and take Cameron off our hands. There was a cycle race going on so the main road was closed. We were initially directed into ... read more

8 months ago if you had asked me which South American nations I would be visiting on my upcoming trip I would have told you that Colombia did not feature in any of my plans. The reputation for Drugs, Danger, and Guerrillas was my reason, but after having spent months meeting travellers whom had ventured into Colombia my view on the Cocaine Capital changed. I was told time-after-time that the land and people are only matched in beauty by one another, and that to miss the oppurtunity to go there would be very unwise. My oppinion of Colombia has been so dramatically altered, that now I am here in Colombia! I caught a flight out of Quito and arrived in Bogota at 8am on Tuesday morning. The first Colombian that I really interacted with was ... read more

Well after nearly 3 weeks in Colombia, I have finally found time to add a new blog. It has been somewhat of a change of pace since leaving Cuba and we now find ourselves quickly approaching the end of our trip. That said, much has been explored in Colombia and some adventuring remains. We arrived in Bogota from Havana on April 12th, one month after leaving Lima, Peru for this fabled island. Cuba was an incredible experience but one that was hard on the pocketbook, therefore it was with some relief that we landed back on the southern continent to find prices more to our liking. Bogota, set at 2600m or so was a refreshing change from the heat of Cuba and was not unlike spring in Vancouver. Cool to cold night followed by warm ... read more

La Vega Picture Blog--from the best place in the world South America » Colombia » Bogota By NilocApril 10th 2007Colin Newcomer Captions coming soon! That is to say, Colombia. Anyway, I have to admit I don't have hardly a few minutes to write right now, but I figured I'd just pop in and say that the reason my blog is so out of date is that I've been having so much fun, and keeping so busy, I hardly have time to go to the internet. I just dropped a track yesterday, which I'm going to put a link to...about la vega and the search for Sarah's mom. What an adventure! I didn't find her while I was there, but my friends there told me they have found where... read more

From Medellin it was off to the capital Bogotá. Another long bus journey of 9 hours which we decided to do during the day but shouldn’t have bothered as all you end up doing is sleeping anyway so should have saved it for the night. Bogotá believe it or not reminded me of Manchester about 15 years ago, lots of similar 70´s looking buildings but built more recently and especially the climate it was always grey and rainy! It was nice to be home! Our first night in the Platypus Hostel was very cold. Our room was in a part of an old colonial building that looks like it should have been condemned a few years back and the room consisted of just a bed with cold tiled floors and we spent most of the night ... read more

Partying with Placebo  South America » Colombia » Bogota By pipincolombiaMarch 22nd 2007 Tonight Placebo came to Bogota and my mate who plays with the band managed to get tickets for me and my friends to the concert, a sneak backstage afterwards, followed by a very drunken party. Despite not knowing any of their songs the concert was great and my friends loved it (Placebo are surprisingly popular over here!). The party afterwards was even better ... lots of vodka (a real treat, usually it is too expensive to buy here on my non-existent volunteer salary) and of course some good old arguadiente just to remind us that we were still in Colombia! Unfortunately the famous two le... read more

Well i have flown into bogota and was really impressed! Me Jules and Robbie grabbed a taxi to our hostel which was located in the historical center and quite a nice section of town to walk around. being quite late we grabbed some dinner at a nice resturant and finished the night off with a couple of beers. The next day i had a chance to see a bit more of the city walking through Bolivar plaza and visiting the Botero museum which is up there with one of the best museums i have ever been to and it was free! all in all it is a really good city to walk around with police literally on every corner it feels like almost the safest city i have been to in south america. It has ... read more
