Greeting folks from a new continent, a new country, and new levels of confusion for mr marc. Since my camping on Whaiheke (which now seems years ago) so much has happened its as bonkers as can be. Firstly i"ve been lucky enough to take part in officially the worlds longest ever 24th september - i was technically in this day for about 45 hours thanks to my crossing of the dateline - yeah. So anywho, the first thing is that i{m fine (apart from the lack of an apostrophe key) and have arrived in Santiago, checked into my lovely anglo freindly hostel and have successfully got lost, found myself, got lost again, found myself again and then got to a computer all in a day. Next the story of how i got to this situation. Well, ... read more

After a week acclimatising to a different culture, climate and economic situation, we are finally, at last, on the road on our bikes. Santiago is a huge, flat sprawl. The smog is really bad at this time of year, and this meant that the only time we saw the Andes that are a famous backdrop to Chile´s capital was the day we arrived. We spent the week preparing our bikes for the road, buying supplies, and planning our route out of Santiago, breaking these tasks up with a little sightseeing. The highlight was a visit to the fabulous museum dedicated to the 15 or more Indian cultures that lived in Central America and the north-eastern South American continent in the few thousand years until Columbus arrived in 1492. The inspiring collection concentrates on stone carvings, pottery, ... read more

Why is it that people insist on telling you their horror stories, but then say, "oh, but you don´t have to worry"? Such was the case with the crazy volcanologist (that´s volcano expert to you and I) that I met in Christchurch. He´d just spent several months working on a volcano near Banos in Ecuador and I had several hours of, "it could destroy Banos any day now" and "you´ll have seven minutes to run from the pyroclastic flow". Some comfort to a girl who´ll be in Banos in a few weeks! However, I´m looking on the bright side. If I am killed by a pyroclastic flow it will certainly be an impressive way to go. I´ve instructed Mum to dig out a flattering picture for the paper - because there is no way I want ... read more

My last day in Lima, Peru was spent shopping for souvenirs and then having lunch with a friend. After arriving back at the hotel it was a rush for the airport as there wasn’t much time left before the flight to Santaigo. After I told the taxi driver what time my plane flies out he started driving on the wrong side of the road and we even ran some red lights to get me to the airport on time! Fortunately I made it on time. Santiago de Chile I arrived in Santiago late at night and not having a guide book (about Chile) or a hotel booked, I planned on getting a taxi driver to take me to a hotel within my price range. The first guy I came across was very pushy and aggressive so ... read more

We´ve just had a read through of our entries, and found a foreign body - one we didn´t write, dated 3rd August and entitled something like ´Public transport 2002¨. It´s pretty garbled and wasn´t written by us - we´ve no idea how it got on there. Just in case you thought we´d completed flipped out. DJ... read more

Well, here we are on our final night in South America, on our way out for a pisco sour and a huge steak. We can hardly believe the 7 weeks are nearly over, we´ve managed to pack so much into them. We arrived here in Chile early on Sunday, and spent the day wandering around Santiago (and got a haircut!!), which is a beautiful, rather European, sophisticated city surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Yesterday we found our way to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar on the coast, 120 kms from the city. There is a series of 15 funicular lifts around the town, from which you can get wonderful views over the bay (and some good insights into the housing behind the scenes!). A modern metro system takes you around to Vina del Mar for the princely ... read more

Ok so we were a bit rubbish after Kim left and didn't do very much! We did go up a little hill thing which was near the hostel. Not quite sure what its called! We got a finuncular up to the top (little railway thing) then took a walk across to get a round trip up and down on the cable car, then walked back along the top to get the funincular (dont know how its spelt so thought id go for a bit of variation!!) back down again. We thought we would get some really lovely pictures from the cable car as it was sunset, but we had to wait for over an hour to get on the cable car so in fact it was dark!!!! We did get some nice views of the city ... read more

I pictured a transport system of collective positive energy emitted from the homes of my readers. It was strong enough to carry two very large and heavy bags to me the day after I published my blog. Thank you to all who sent your positive thoughts and messages my way. I arrived "home" to find my bags. From what I can tell everything is intact. I measured this by checking that each shoe had its proper partner. Does it show me to be materialistic when I admit that I got a tear in my eye? So why have I remained in Santiago? As some of you know, my plan was to head immediately for the coast to a town called Valparaiso where I would look for a job. But my bags arrived two days ago and ... read more

Our room in the hostel was quite small with just a double bed in it, so small that you can only get into the bed from one side which was a bit annoying!!! We had only booked for two nights as we didn´t want to book for longer as we didn´t know what it would be like. Kim had also only booked for a few days but she was in the dorm. Its really nice here so we decided to book for the rest of the time we´re in Chile, partly because we´re too lazy to move elsewhere!!!! The hostel is really nice though, has a proper homely feel, with a proper kitchen so we can cook our own food. We moved into the dorm room which is actually really nice. There are three sets of ... read more
