well, studying is a pain and since i am not traveling that much, i am not updating my blogs. well after leaving buenos aires ( the best city) i came with my program to study for 2 months in santiago chile. i have been here for a month and so far, this is what i have observed. chile itself is a skinny diverse country with probably the most stable economy in south america. after talking with people, they say that it is the best country in south america to do buisness becuase, the people are reliable, things work and function, corruption is the lowest, laws work and are enforced. the country, its tradiciones and government are very conservative and the church still has lots of influence. so i leave in the providencia, which is near the ... read more

Hi guys, Well two months somehow have gone by already and it seems bloody unfair! Really to do South America properly you need a lot longer, maybe a year would do....any donations from anyone to allow us to stay here a bit longer would be welcome...the Rich and Rach fund.... Having just checked our last entry I have to report that unfortunately we did not see any nuns or get to hear Ave Maria as we choose to go to the restaurant on a sunday....yes it seems obvious now that they wouldn´t be open on the holy day of rest! Nevermind, central lima was a dump in any event. We didn´t stay there long and quickly hot footed it back to Miraflores...a much nicer part of town! We did however go for a really good meal ... read more

During our stay in Chile we stayed at a wonderful bed and breakfast in the heart of Providencia. Waking up knowing what delights were downstairs for our breakfast was enough to put a spring in our step! Although Santiago is not the most attractive of cities, it provides enough to keep two Scottish tourists amused. We spent a day touring two vineyards, sampling the local produce! Although not a great red wine drinker, I have to admit I was kind of hooked! Lunch was enjoyed with a rather eccentric English lady who decided to join us telling us about her church, her one kidney and being chased out of a Rio slum by some men with guns!! Our last day was spent on the coast in Vina del Mar, about 1 and half hours from Santiago. ... read more

It´s almost over and we can´t believe it. In about six hours´ time, the South American leg of our travels will end when we hop on a flight out of Santiago and travel for 20 hours - crossing the international date line in the process - to Australia. We have been in this continent of incredible contrasts for four and a half months now, but the time has just roared by. Given the choice, we´d both stay longer - months rather than weeks longer - but we can't, and anyway, the couple of weeks we've just had have been the perfect way to sign off. The last time we wrote, we were about to set off on a nine-day odyssey from San Carlos de Bariloche on the eastern edge of Patagonia all the way down to ... read more

The day stared well with 4 rounds of brown toast and delicious jam to go on it. It is amazing how something so basic can bring a smile to our faces, but maybe it's just a sign that we're missing home? We followed this by taking some light exercise and visiting the nearby St Cristobal Hill where we got a good, if not a little hazy, view of Santiago and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. At around 2.30 we made our way to the football stadium. On the metro there was a lot of ticker tape (possibly they stole this idea off Pompey), a group of chanting fans roped off for their own carriage and a lot of transport police. Following the noise and the mass of people all going in the same direction, we got into ... read more

Today was several chores and a walking tour. We did some shopping and sent another parcel home, and travelled into the suburbs to buy tickets for tomorrow's big game - the Santiago derby. Afterwards we did a fairly interesting walking tour around Santiago’s most interesting buildings, a pleasant stroll in the afternoon sunshine but not exactly rivetting blog material. Then, after a power nap, we hit the town. We had dinner in a 1940’s-styled bar (something we’ve not come across before in our collective 56 years), misunderstanding the Spanish menu and ending up with about a kilo of cheese each. This was washed down however with a very pleasant Chilean red. They had ‘Kitty Fernandez’ singing and sounding like her proverbial strangled namesake, with a guy supposedly accompanying her on the piano. But the piano stayed ... read more

Kriss: Santiago smells of exhaust gases and vanilla! The first is due to the population of 4+ million and the numerous cars/buses to take this lot around the town. The second one is mostly produced by the Crazy4Nuts or Nuts4Nuts trolleys on every street-corner... :) It has been nice to be in a big town again - to feel the pulse of life around us, people being busy or having fun. Chileans are quite amorous, kissing couples of all ages are not a rare sight here - but so far it's never been out-of-control snogging / making out, like you can see in Europe. "Love is in the air"! I must also point out that the selection of fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruits in this country has been warmly welcomed by our digestive systems. Green, ripe ... read more

So its time to say a sad goodbye to South America. We have had such a wonderful time here - its hard to believe we have been here 5 months - it feels both longer and shorter than that. Our final days have been spent in Santiago - the capital of Chile aka the least recommended place we have been. Whenever we spoke to anyone previously about having been here we generally got a wrinkle of the nose, a shrug of the shoulders and the statement "its just a big city". I have to say I agree. We are, however, staying in a very picturesque corner on Calle Londres and Calle Paris - its like an old quarter of Paris. Our hostel (Residencial Londres) is a grand old townhouse which is lovely. The city itself is ... read more
