Me Nikki, jenny and rachel and the ozzie boys departed Pucon to make our way to Mendozza in Argentina via Santiago the day after the volcano climb. Jack bus company which was great as the bus waiter even tucked us in!! We arrived in Santiago at 7am and bought tickets to Mendozza straight away. Our bus left at 8am for Mendozza and after driving for 3 hours we got stopped as we had to wait for the Chile and Argentina armies to clear the snow from the andes. We jumped off the bus and our mates bow max dave and mickey were all stopped 2. After a 4 hour wait we find the roads can not be cleared and we have to drive all the way back to Santiago!!! Nigtmare!!! Typical south american disorganisation and no ... read more

I am scheduled for an overnight stop in Santiago, Chile before flying to Bolivia tomorrow morning. I´m staying in the city centre so I intended to spend the afternoon walking round the various attractions in the main square. What I didn´t realise was that about 10,000 students were protesting for a new curriculum, free bus fares and no exam fees. There was a massive armed police presence and somewhat predictably the protests sparked violence. Unfortunately with my head in a guide book I didn´t notice anything amis until the streets started to fill up with tear gas, it´s not very pleasant stuff it makes you nose and throught burn as well as making your eyes water. Obviously I made a sharp exit, on the way back to the hotel I saw loads of students being arrested ... read more

Leaving on a jetplane, don't know when I'll be back again... So, let´s begin at where I left my mom and sister at the Chicago O'Hare airport. After going through security I did not shed anymore tears. Ok, I take it back. Once I got to my terminal I sat down, ate the rest of my sandwich and then read Jen & Jason´s cards. Jen´s made me well up. But it was very sweet and much appreciated. The plane from Chicago to Dallas was delayed about 20 minutes, and of course that stressed me out. However the plane ended up being very empty (and very nice) so I found an exit seat and sprawled out. As lucky as I was on the first flight, I knew I would have no such luck on the long flight ... read more

Le fourbe ... read more

So after a 16 hour flight from Sydney with a transit stop in Auckland we arrived in Santiago, Chile. A horrendously polluted city which has a constant layer of smog over it blocking any view which there might be of the Andes. We enrolled on a Spanish course for a week and we are now fluent in Espanol. No not really. Although surprisingly for the first time James can remember Anne is better than James. Therefore Anne has to do all the talking as James has given up!! Although James did take a fancy to one of the Spanish teachers called Catty! On the Friday evening we went to Riv a pub to watch Catty's brother play in a band - he wasn't that good. Anne struggled to drink the enormous shots of rum (at least ... read more

Hi everybody, Oh my gosh, I hear most of you say - 'you mean they are still alive and didn't disappear in the deepest darkest corners of Chile where we last heard from them....' Well yes, we are still alive and kicking (yay we hear you all say) and have ashamedly been avoiding the blog like a plague due to first being too busy to update it, then it felt like such a big job we kept saying that we needed to allocate a big amount of time to it... and then we didn't have a home computer... etc - you get the drift, we're lazy. Anyone who knows us well, would know that we are the kind of people who always leave things to the last minute - so here goes - our travels in ... read more

We arrive in Santiago, Chile five hours before we set off due to crossing the international date line not long after leaving New Zealand´s shores. It is a surprisingly easy long-haul flight. Santiago is the capital of Chile and is home to 5.5m of the country´s 16.5m population. At the airport we are decended upon with great gusto by seemingly half of said population, all of whom wish to offer us a taxi ride and/or accomodation. They mostly have ´Official Taxi¨ certificates which all look completely different which doesn´t help. Having previously had accomodation recommended to us (but not booked), we select one of the friendlier looking drivers and jump aboad a minibus. The driver is lovely and points out to us all of the transport infrastructure, good supermarkets and tourist sites along the route. We ... read more

Despite leaving everything to the last minute, there was a relaxing calmness that set in, a calmness that can only be achieved through travelling experience. As any well travelled person would know: from the moment you leave the safe confines and creature comforts of home, you are subject to the typicals of travel lore- where plans fly out the window, itineries are non existent, lost baggage, thieves, crazy taxi drivers and nasty check in staff; things that are completely out of your control. For awhile there everything was going smoothly- mum and dad were safely away on their flight to New Zealand via Sydney and there I was, in the murderously long check in queue- praying all the while that the mean looking woman on counter 10 wasn’t my check-in lady. “Ding Ding- Next Please- Counter ... read more

Apologies to everyone following the blog, but not enough time or activity to justify individual entries for Chile. Thus follows a condensed summary of my time in Chile. The Chilean border was closed the day before we left Mendoza (20th May) but chanced it and borded the bus for Santiago.... luckily the border was open but long delays at immigration meant it was 10 hours before we arrived in Santiago. Santiago is a modern looking city, thanks in part to earthquakes destroying many older buildings, which have sadly been replaced with high rise towers. The city suffers from terrible pollution resulting in a heavy smog; ruining visibilty of The Andes and hard on the lungs. There wasnt much to do in Santiago during the day, but evenings were eventful. Stayed in the Barrio Brasil a nice ... read more
